Leadville Colorado area question - trails open in winter?
I might be coming through the Leadville, CO area in my Diesel Mog next week. Are any of the trails and back country roads open this time of year? I have been reading about the old mining operations and ghost towns and thought it would be cool to get off the beaten path.

Highest incorporated city in America and record snowfalls, I'd say access to most trails would be snowmobile only.

You'll have better luck if you stay on the east side of the divide. Breckenridge is buried, but 23 miles away Fairplay doesn't have much at all. Still, if you're in the trees, you'll be in snow.

Keep in mind that some of the passes were closed in late July due to snow! I was there in August and the snow was pretty deep at the higher elevations then.

Not a good time of year to be hitting the high rocky mountain trails. All you will do is get burried and screw the routs up for snowmobiles.

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like I am going to be in Carbondale, CO either Sunday or Tuesday. I will plan on staying on the major roads but talk to the locals to see what might be possible.
