Gear install?

What would be a rough estimate on having someone install R&P with an ARB (I allready have the parts) in a Toy 3rd member. I do all my own work but have never installed gear sets and I'm a little hesitent on trying. I know I need to learn but this axle needs to get on the road, trail a.s.a.p. Thanks

you have one of the easiest diffs to do a gear/carrier swap on. If you have a dial indicator, torque wrench, and a inch lb. torque wrench with a dial guage, you can very easily do it. You will need access to a press with bearings pullers and installers. If you dont have anything like this, dont bother trying to setup your own gears then. But there is no better time than now

Thanks for the reply Pietro. I've got everything except the press. I wonder if one of those cheap Harbor Freight press's are a good idea. I'm pretty capable of everything from fab to paint and a few engine rebuilds. Should just get off my ass and do it!

The press isn't a really big deal if you have a setup bearing for the pinion. there is a shim that goes behind the pinion bearing that is on the pinion gear that sets pinion depth. This shim will need to be adjusted to various thicknesses until you get the right pattern on the gears. A good set of bearing removal tools is needed to remove the bearing without destroying it so you can add or subtract shims. If you get a setup bearing or make one that slips on and off, it makes your life much easier. You put a shim on, slide the setup bearing on, adjust backlash and then check your pattern. If you need to adjust the pinion depth, just pull it all apart, slide the bearing off, and change the shim. Much easier than pressing on and off a bearing.

The rest is cake because your diff uses threaded adjusters for setting up carrier backlash and bearing preload. Very simple to do. Search here and Yahoo, there is probably some good writeups on setting up a yota diff. I never setup an ARB but it shouldn't be difficult, just more time consuming having to drill a hole for the airline. I have read that the seals for the locker are very delicate, you can fawk em' up easily I guess.

Thanks Pietro, I've got an install kit on order (should be here monday) so its now or never. I'm still a little confused on how you find the backlash but the search is on. I've tried the FAQ in the 4-Runner section but not much luck. Appriciate the info.

b2dude, KS Toy, I figured atleast 2 bills which to me could fund something else (winch rope maybe) so I better figure it out. Measure twice, install once! Thanks for the replies.

backlash is adjusted by turning the adjuster on one side and then turning the adjuster on the other side the same amount which in turn will move the ring gear towards or away from the pinion gear. As it goes towards the pinion, backlash will decrease. Moving it away from the pinion increases backlash.
