1350CV + D60 pinion= carnage

Here in WI, we don't have much in the way of Granite or anyother rock for that matter. We're mostly stuck with bolder piles and muddy trails to play on. WE found real ROCK! I broke my shait bad Somehow I managed to snap a HP D60 pinion and wipe out a 1350 CV in one shot. Fortunatly it was near the days end. Pic.s -->

YEP! I show no mercy I actually crawled all but 2' from the top with out the lockers. Then power was transfering from side to side and forward progress was stopped. I locked the ARB's and tryed several times...... I got to the top, but was denied

Had the front ARB engaged at the time? What gears are you running? Broke moving forward or in a hard reverse/save?

I run 4.10 gears, this was the front HP 60 that broke while moving forward...... HARD in the gas. The ARB is still all good.

looks like 4.10's according to the #'s on the shaft. Why would 7.17's matter when the shaft broke at the yoke?

I think the pinion breaking made the c/v bottom out- It seems like it - Your looking around 300 $ range as long at the rest is okay- This is a tenetive quote-- Jess

so is this a HAD shaft? now might be a good time to get the flange for the yoke at the axle.

The chains are on the rear, and they're still working well. This is a front that broke.

Honestly not sure, when I set everything up, all seemed well. During set up, I had the front end suspended by a forklift with the axle end of the front shaft disconnected...just hanging off the t-case and still had a few inches of droop to spare. I figured this would be fine. Guess I missed something? It never bound up flex testing either...

even a bit of axle wrap would have bound that 1350 quick. Look at the ears, any marks on them? 1350's have crap for angularity. But they are really strong.

Look at the way the pinion broke. It bent off on one side and distorted the teeth on the other side. I bet you get more articulation when you are bouncing

The axle yoke is a 1410, the 1350 is only the cv.

No obvious wrap was noticed.
\

Edit: also, no wear marks on the axle yoke for contacting the 1410 driveshaft yoke

Hey, what's the deal with the center ball in the CV? Can it be removed? Can I weld it back in place?

I'm thinking since this is a trail only rig, I might be able to just remove it or at the very least weld it back in place....... Thoughts?

I see you have warn hubs...so I'm gonna say

Ditch the fawkin complicated CV shit, and just run a regular 2-joint driveshaft. I run standard shafts front and rear, and my front is a '76 Ford D44 low pinion, and those older fords are fucking rock bottom low pinions. I have to use 6 degree shims just to get the pinion flat! So what I'm saying is with your HP youll be fine!

Of course, none of this solves why your pinion broke in the first place.
