Ford 4.9 (300) 4x4 Engine?

I am gathering parts for a Jeep wagon build in the next year.

The Ford 4.9 6 is something that I have already wanted to run for its torque, and economy and so forth.

The finished vehicle weight will be a bit over 4k.

Any thoughts on running this? Are they known for reliability issues with head gaskets? It seems like I had read this before.

Thank you for your help.

Why not run a 4.0?

My dad had an old Ford with one of the 300 sixes in it, it was as reliable as a stone hammer....I don't know about the EFI version though

I went though quite a bit of hassle with an EFI 300 a few years ago.

I am buying a truck that has a 300 in it, carbed. It is going into a low-tech retro wheeler type of a rig. I want something that I can fix with three screw drivers and crescent.

My dad had a van with one that got mid to upper teens and never missed a beat. He drove it for about 10 years without issue.
