So has anyone checked to see if there housing stayed true after a big cut. That's what makes me not want to cut big.

Question Consensus...

So is it pretty safe to say that, on average, cutting/plating & cutting the ring gear will get you around two inch's gained? While just smoothing the bottom up as high as possible (and keeping the 14 stock bolts) can net you close to an inch?

1/2"-5/8" maybe.

dunno about the tweaked housings. mines certainly not been babied and held up, but my theory was always if it breaks. I can always get another 14b for $200 or so and start over... I'd think a nice bridge/truss over the top of the housing would give some good piece of mind.

the plan on my build is to turn downt he ring gear to the od of the carrier ... ~9.5" OD on the ring gear ... and then shave the housing to fit ... should get me in the range of D44 clearance on the housing.

ill let you know how many miles the ring gear lasts before it goes boom!

seems excessive
Somebody did that that put axles under an S10 blazer. A white blazer as I remember. I remember looking at the ring gear and thinking, "damn, only half of the tooth is left"

Wish I would have done a full shave job while it was out, but at the time we just ground the lip down and plated the bottom so there was a smooth run from the diff to the pinion guard.

Here is the shave that Shane just did on my 14.

It gained about 2.5" over stock.

Do you have plans to add any bolts to the bottom? Shane?
Came out clean.

excessive is my middle name

im going to turn down 3 gears, and have each one treated differently, leave one stock, have one heat treated, and maybe have one cryo / heat treated / or that other process i saw on here a while back ... similar to a micro-peening process that leaves the surface looking like chrome. anyone remember what the company was called?

[QUOTE=Gutter Runner;10703364]Not too extreme. I left the bottom bolt but did end up gaining about an inch of clearance.

This is exacly how I did mine, Well kind of. I run a lot of rocky trails and it gets shaved a bit more each time out. I'm getting close to a 13 bolt as that bottom bolt is about history.

I just welded in some flat bar to make a ramp out of that lip on the bottom, and let the rock do the rest. A shaved ring gear and plated bottomn would help a bit, or just press more on the skinny pedal

Gained 2-2.25 inches

Had done by a professinal axle shop in Houston. Took 0.5 in of the ring gear on lathe then 2.5 on housing and replated with 3/8th. Custom diff. Axle cut at machine shop to keep true. Needs paint but otherwise very pleased.

Will get some better pictures tomorrow on the Jeep.

Any photos with the cover removed? I'd like to get a better look inside!

Will see if I can find one with the cover off. Talked to my guy. He said he can do more, but kind of pricey. If you deliver the axle he will do the entire job for $800 (includes parts and labor for turning ring down on lathe and machining axle and new custom cover). Turn around time is about 4 weeks now.

Ha, that's the number I had come up with, but did the last one for a customer for $600 out the door, 2 day turn (not always attainable). I also put on some of my disc brackets for $50 installed.

Yeah wasn't cheap, but it was local and a good guy overall. Wasn't in a hurry to get it back, and he did a few additional items also at the same time. Kind of limited in what I can do myself in the garage with only a grinder and floor jacks. Will tackle most other things but this was past my desires to try myself. I see you have some ORI's in your avator, Love mine, and would not ever trade them.

Wow!
I have shaved every diff I own, and I would buy that kit from Balstic if I had a 14 bolt to do.
Nice looking setup.

Na, not enough money in it for me. I still do them for friends if they bring beer and help, but I don't retail them.
