Just goes to show there's nothing new. In the '30s,this was a common accessory. I don't know if it was factory or strictly aftermarket, but for some cars, (Hudson is the one I remember) you could get a pickup box that mounted in the trunk and protruded past the rear bumper. They were removable, and in fact they may have been telescoping so you could close the trunk with the box in place.

And then there was the model T Ford. The roadster and the pickup were identical except for the box. The roadster trunk on mine is a separate unit and it only takes a few minutes to unbolt it and switch it for a pickup box.
