But I don't have mine mounted to the bumper. It has a receiver and a hook. So I can put it anywhere. Jumper cables and an extra battery is very useful for other stuff too. Think how many times you just need a little push. I would like to build another one with more power. An 8000 lb is a little heavy to move easily. I may make one from a 5000 lb.

That's not to say I endorse the above setup. If your going to have a perminate mount winch, why not have something that will do the job for sure. (You don't care about weight if it's mounted)

Check out the cable routing to hook. Seriously, WTF?

That is true ^^^ and true.

But since you don't seem to know... the stock bumpers you see on a newer jeep are hollow plastic 'crush-zone's that cover the frame cross brace that is the real bumper behind it.

Replacing hollow plastic with even 11ga plate steel is an upgrade.

I can smash this one and have a new bumper/tire carrier delivered to my house 4 TIMES, for what it would cost me to make one like it, and making a 800lb, 1/4" plate steel bumper for a Jeep is stupid.

It would work in theory and in general practice... but... look at the pic closely and where the cable is routed. If the bumper doesn't fail first, the winch will.

My brother has driven various 91-97 thunderbird / cougars over the last 15 years and he always removes the plastic front bumper , fills the honeycomb with cement and re installs the bumper

Makes a nice battering ram when some dipshit pulls out in front of you

It's not any worse than any other homemade replacement bumper.

If you want to wring hands and virtue signal over people doing things like that go to Reddit.

Why?

How is it any different than taking the plastic bumper off a Jeep, Toyota, or other 4wd and putting a steel bumper in its place?

This whole thread is a vehicular homicide case waiting to happen. I'd be willing to bet 25% of the vehicles in this thread have killed their owners........or should.
