Buggy tailgates

Searched for about 1/2 hour and got tired of looking at stock tailgates. What have you guys done for tailgates on buggy's. I'm building a removable cooler rack over my rear compartment, but don't want to have to remove it just to get to tools underneath. I'm looking for hinge, latch and frame ideas. I plan on "skinning" it to match the rest of the body panels. Please post pics/links if you have them.

I'll get pics of what it will be going on later

I don't see anything wrong with making a buggy tailgate thread. With the hotrod type buggies being built now-a-days, these kinds of details are becoming more important. I also searched and didn't find much. I didn't try that hard though, I must admit.

This is a great write up for a tailgate (the rest of the car also). Those latches seem perfect. I would like to see more of the hinge.

Unfortunately I haven't started a build thread yet. I've been meaning to do it, just haven't. I will try to gather pictures and start a thread.

Here is a Pic of the tailgate I did on my buggy. Unfortunately I just changed the back half of the cage and haven't installed the tailgate again yet.

FWIW it is the original 1953 Willys tailgate cut down to fit.

Mine is simple.

CJ hinges at the bottom and hold down clamps welded to the inside to latch.

I dont have any finished pics.

This was the first tailgate that I thought of when I saw your questions. Tim does some great work and he makes fabbing a tailgate look easy.

It looks like the hinge is just a bolt through the frame and threaded into an insert in the lower tube of the tailgate.

So he comes to me saying he wanted a functional tail gate on a buggy. I told him I'd see what I could do

I inquired about the hinges because I thought they were plastic.

Do you think the plastic latch will hold up to a bag of tools slamming against it on a climb?

Everything about this tailgate looks exactly like what I want to do. Thanks.

I dont have any pics with the new rear seats mounted yet, I will post up when I put them in. I ended up getting a pair of Race trim high back seats. They are a little tall but they are only 20" wide. I really wanted separate seats rather than a bench. It will keep the kids off of each other.

The re-upholstered bench looks good!

what did you use for a hinge on your tailgate? How much did you stretch your buggy? What is the wheel base before/after

I just welded on a stainless steel piano hinge and bolted it to the buggy.

The wheel base is 114" but it didnt change in the stretch. I only redid and stretched the upper part of the cage and stretched from behind the front seats back. This is what came off.

Nice job on the 4 seat conversion. The new dash looks sweet also. I really miss the old girl. I about shed a tear when I saw that rear cage laying on the ground. Keep the updates coming.

Another vote for cut-down stock tailgates. woodlee's and pepe's look sweet, and it's hard to replicate the factory-stamped vehicle make.

A buddy of mine used a cut-down CJ tailgate that looks sweet.
