Who can make custom shafts?

Without the long drawn out story...I can now make SEVERAL of the parts I need for my jeep rather than buying them.

Unfortunatly we cant do anything with splines. And that puts a big delay in a home brew doubler build.

So I need a mid shaft for a 231/300 kit. I can make everything else. All I need is the mid shaft. I've emailed Duffy and Mad Rooster in regards to selling the midshaft seperate. No replies after a few weeks now.

So who can make me a 231/300 midshaft?

Also, I do not have a 231 right now. So Im not gonna lie, I have no idea what the exact measuremnts are. Can anyone help me out there?

Edit: And yes, I realize anyone who makes shafts can probably do this. BUT...I've never had to source out anything like this so I dont have a clue even where to start looking.

So can you turn the blank then have the heat treat and splining outsourced? That would save you some $$$ and I could point you to some great companies.

Axle Jack at CTM did the midshaft between my Klune and Atlas out of 300m after I broke the stocker. His price was fair and turnaround was quick. Branik also quoted the job and was a little cheaper but I needed the part quicker than they could get to it. So, those would be two companies to try for sure.

I plan on making my own out of a ax-15 output shaft and a 231 output shaft. I'm going to cut the input of the 231 output off and bore a hole into it. Then I'm going to take the ax-15 output shaft and cut off its output, turn down part of it to press fit into the 231 output shaft. Then bevel the crap out of both, press them together, and weld it together. I ran some quick #'s about how much torque this shaft should see and I think it will be strong enough. Criticisms are welcome.

There are some good HT sources here on the board (heretic), send the splining to Gerhardtgear.com out of California. They are basically awesome.

Maybe check out Jeds Machining. I know they do resplining of stock np203 shafts for the 203/205 doubler and it was only around $70 with supplying the stock shaft.

I bet they could fix you up.

Few PM's sent.

Biggest problem with persuing this right now is I have no idea what size the shaft needs to be. I still do not have the 231 so Im shooting in the dark completly.

Does anyone have the measurements or a shaft out they could be so generous as to measure for me?

231/300 doubler shaft

Hey man I think I can help you out with the length of the shaft you need. I have a 231/300 doulber in my rig now, I made all the parts myself including the shaft. I'm a toolmaker my trade and so I made my own cutter and did all the splining myself. So I don't know if my set up will be the same stack height as what yours is, but if you interested I'll send you some pics of it and if it looks the same, I'll give you all the dimensions you need. Both the 231 and the 300 are flipped, and so I made clocking rings for both as well. The whole doubler is in my rig right now being mocked up, but I'll be pulling it out in the next week, so like I said if this sounds like what your needing let me know and I'll post some pics and dimensions.

It turns out that the output shaft of an ax-15 is hardened all the way through. The 231 output shaft is case hardened, too. My grandfather's small Logan just couldn't handle the hardened parts and I don't have a way to broach the splines on a blank. Looks like I need to buy one.

Greatwhite, what did you end up going with on this one?

Edit: If I heat the shafts up to a deep glowing red and let them cool slowly, that should remove the heat treatment, right? I mean, I have torches and could try it...

ASP... I have not persued this any further at this point. Not because I've lost intrest, but because its Halloween season and I have a major role in Denver's premier haunt, City of the Dead.

I can tell you everyone Ive spoken with in regards to either a shaft ready to go, or heat treat or spline cut, nets the shaft total around 230-300 bones. With a long way to go on the build, I've put off the t-case for now and am focusing on other things.

The way Im seeing it is, Box4Rox is 525 everything ready to go....all in need to do is turn wrenches.

I build my own means, still figuring out the shaft, then making the nessicasry plates. With the figures Ive got right now, to build my own would net me near 425. So, not to be lazy, but it really is almost easier just to order a kit. I dont know, its still up in the air.

I can tell you though, if in fact I can find someone who will do shafts without costing me my left testicle and 3 fingers, there's potential for a new doubler kit to hit the market. BUT, that is an "IF"....

Hahaha, Have fun with Halloween season

I too have a long way to go in the build, I just really want to get my driveline squared away early on.

Last night I heated the ax-15 output shaft up until it was glowing orange and I let it cool in ambient air. I'll check its hardness tonight with the file trick.

Good luck on your junk. I'll let you know if I have any break throughs or find any dirt cheap shafts...
