How fast is FAST...?

so ive been doing some research for new build...and ive read a lot about speed and light rigs VS. heavy rigs, also about strength of parts...suspension and chassis setups, power...ect. so this got me thinking.....how fast is...FAST!! in the rocks....NOT in the desert....im talking about river beds and boulder fields....are comps like KOH the fastest rockcrawling around..?? just want to be sure that when i talk about fast i have a idea of what is fast really is...

vids..??

It might be easier to pick a range. What is top speed in gear range when crawling.

no limit on range...4wd, wide open as fast as a rig can handle.

like this....but more rocks and at a sustained speed for a longer distance.....if possible..?!

the speed that you can go thru rocks is dictated by if you can keep air in the tires and the rims straight. My low range goes to 40ish mph it plenty fast to break parts.

40 is medium sized whoops to a normal person. Maybe big whoops to a badass. But, you are not going to be doing "trails" at 40. In the rocks, 15 feels like 80. If I had to guess the best rig and driver in the world could do an easy trail like Claw averaging, maybe 20? That may even be high.

D9 Canyon at the Stampede race. Literally a rockcrawling trail they drove a bulldozer through. Basketball size rocks with bigger ones scattered along the way, climbing in elevation the whole way. 32mph was fully getting it. I wouldn't call it "rockcrawling" but not sure what you're asking.

Look up the winning times at the KOH races. If I recall correctly, Jason Scherer won in '09 with an average speed of 19.5mph and a max speed of 135mph. 135 is pretty fast in the dirt...

Loren averaged about the same at 19.4mph in KOH '10

All of that is with a lot of fast desert thrown in the mix.

Just curious...when did he hit 135 mph in Koh? I must have been out of the car.

It was probably a few seconds after you were going 134.

Ha, I should have read the full post where you disputed this speed the first time. What was the top speed you guys posted?

We hit 114 passing Clint Ellit (I think it was Clint) on Melville, but we were only at 114 for a very short period of time. The lake bed was ending and Clint was fully getting it....we didn't have a ton of choices. I guess we could have hit the brakes...but we both thought that option was GAY!

Any faster this year? We only made it to mile 43 and the seal on the trans pump fell out (Now that's GAY) so we didn't get to the real fast stuff.

For the record, 114 is still pretty fast in the dirt...

Was D9 the first rock section or after mile 16 when you go up the hill? Either way, 30mph is incredible!

The D9 road was the "graded" road from ~race mile 3-6 or so. It was built in the 24 hours preceding the xtreme outlaw 250 race in june as a last minute route change to circumvent a last minute change of mind by a property owner. The most miserable section of the course IMO.

OK thanks. 30 is still fast through there but more attainable than what I was thinking of for sure.
