She is a big reason for me to stop. I don't want her growing up like I did watching my dad hammered all the time or picking me up after school and driving home with a beer in his lap. I still have not and will not have any amount of booze and drive with my kid. I had a DUI back in 2007 also so this has been a progressive problem.

I "quit" drinking several months ago and it's been wonderful!! I've lost count on how long it's been (purposefully), but close to 6 months. I found if I kept a count of how long drinking was still something in the front of my mind like it always had been. After about 30days you lose that urge and realize you are more productive without it.

I also lost a bunch of weight which I contribute heavily to the useless beer calories.

and the biggest benefit is to my family (wife and son) and friends. I'm a much better person without it. I'll still have a beer or a glass of wine in a (legitimately!) social gathering, but none in excess.

I didn't drink a drop for at least two weeks or so. I remember trying to have a beer on a weekend and only drinking half of it, just didn't want it for some reason.

Amazingly enough, since I quit, I can go to sleep just fine much to my surprise, and at a decent hour as well. I also wake up feeling refreshed and in a decent mood. Seems the booze kept me up. Additionally, I didn't know I could get that much shit done at home during the evenings. Seems working on the house or in the garage is more productive than watching the tube and drinking! Who knew, right!?

I've since had my drinks, and I do enjoy a good scotch with a cigar, I'm sure that will never change, but I don't drink every night. I'll have a few beers on a weekend night when I'm hanging out with the GF. A bottle of rum (750ml) used to last me 2 nights, now I've had the same bottle for over a month with no danger of it running out any time soon. I've taken on a larger class load for next semester because I now seem to have all this free time to fill up with productive things.

A change that I didn't suspect is my friends reaction to how I am. I've been told things like "when did you stop being an asshole?" or "What happened that made you so nice?" and things of that nature for the last couple of months. I didn't realize I was such the curmudgeonly prick before.

I've found what works for me and hopefully I can keep it up. Good luck to you and I hope you can as well!! I'll cheers you with the gay-assed sleepytime green tea that I seem to have become accustomed to having a cup of every night!
It's so easy man to go over board. Nothing wrong with tea my wife makes me some from time to time.

I even left my beer in the fridge until my wife gave it to the neighbor, whiskey, vodka, etc in pantry, and wine in wine fridge, which normally if there was alcohol in the house, I couldn't pass it up.
Same here. Pop a beer and kiss the wife and kid. Should be them first! I always did the 30 pk thing. Every wheeling trip 36 pk minimum and a bottle of crown, I would go through most of it myself in two days.

I purposely left the remaining beers in my fridge, liquor in the cabinet, wine in the pantry because why should my wife not be able to enjoy and occasional drink? She is not the one with the problem. Doesn't bother me.

I've really never understood people that can down an 18/24/36 pack on their own. I'm lucky if i can go through a 6 pack of "good" beer in 6 months. Now, liquor is a different beast. I tie one on about once a year on average. Otherwise I'm a drink here every so often type.

Day 4 feel great.

So my wife's girlfriend randomly wanted to stop by last night and have girl talk Naturally that means they share a bottle of wine. Didn't phase me and her friend was shocked that I wasn't drinking. I told her that those 2 drinking that bottle of wine would have been my excuse to drink 10 beers easy because in my mind that is a social gathering so it is OK for me to drink as much as I want, even if I get up at 0430.

Instead I sociallized a little, watched some alaska offroad and drank a glass of milk. It was a good night.

I just want to say with all the shit talking I do on here and most of us do on here I really appreciate the input from everyone. It means a lot. I have seen this group do wonderful things for those in need in the past and I have helped as well. So here's to the first friday in a long time I won't be getting shit faced

Second, good for you man. I mean it, so many people don't realize what they have in a great family and let it pass them by. You're going to love that you made this decision. It'll be tough, but you're a Marine, this should be a walk in the park for you.

Third, I'm glad you came here to talk to us about it. Even if we are all e-friends, we all have each others backs, and especially for those that have served for us. If you get in a spot and start to slide, come here and let us know. Last time I drank, I crawled into a half gallon of vodka and stayed drunk for 3 days.

I haven't drank since. Hasn't been very long though, just a few months. Going through a lot of personal issues right now and was using it too much as a crutch.

This is the first time I've said anything to anybody. Not going to meetings or anything. Cold turkey!!!

I said I need to stop for over 10 years, luckily I had a experience in the desert and woke up. Shoot me a message if you need someone to talk to, I have crazy crazy drinking story's and great recollection of the last 4 3/4 years of my life being sober.

I wish I could have had just one(beer), but I cant so I have none.

About 4 years ago, I realized I had a drinking problem. I wasn't addicted to booze, but I was pretty much addicted to partying. I liked being a happy drunk, but I was still a drunk. I had a beer with every dinner, and a beer next to me in the shop.

Stopped cold turkey and didn't have a drink for over two years. Now I have a couple good beers a month. I'm looking down the barrel at 40 and feel better than I did at 20 (I was drinking a lot by then!)

I wasn't fat, but I still lost 25# without those useless beer calories (20# from not drinking, 5# more from working out...which I didn't feel like doing as much when I was drinking a lot).

Find something you love doing--a healthy outlet. Biking, running, hiking, climbing, basketball, racquetball, etc.

Good for you man!

I quit drinking over 6 years ago. I honestly had not realized how bad I had gotten. I wanted to quit for a while and then see how I felt. I was having some stomach problems, insomnia and some other stuff.

My stomach problems got better really quick, but my insomnia actually got worse. I quickly realized just how many times I was passing out every night and not actually falling asleep.

I look back at that period of time in my life and I'm thankful that I didn't end up with a DUI like so many of my friends. I'm thankful that I didn't hurt or kill anyone else with my drunken antics. And most of all I'm thankful that my family was so close knit and helped me thru quitting.

Good job man. Deciding to quit, and then actually doing, are two different things and you've taken your first step off the boat. I'm sober 6 years and change. There's a lot of good advice out there and there's a lot of bad advice. You have to quit for you. The wife, daughter, job, stuff, none of that will keep you away from the drink even though they are all great reasons.

Find a different outlet for the energy it took to be a drunk in the first place. You will find it necessary to fill your time with something else, so make it constructive. This is pirate, so we all ready have hobbies and activities we can spend time on (and the money we used to buy beer with) and these are usually things we can do with the family, so it's a win win. Sober dad and husband with some extra jangle in the pocket is a great place to start building awesome memories.

I was a stone cold falling off the bar stool black out alcoholic. I did more damage in my drinking career than I care to elaborate on but suffice it to say that you DO NOT ever have to go through what I and many of my friends did. Without the drink the world is on offer, go get ya some.

Don't discount that there might very well be some deep seeded stuff buried within that you've covered up and are not consciously aware of. If there is, it may come out in other ways and other behaviors and it won't go away until it's dealt with. You may be a man of few words and don't want to talk to others. Could be for a lot of reasons and that's cool. Just know that anything you talk about (especially on here, but other places as well) is not burdening the other person nor is it weak. Keeping destructive things inside us only destroys one thing in the end... Ourselves.

Keep us updated. I would suggest checking out a closed AA meeting. You don't have to say anything to anyone if you don't want to.

I feel pretty damn good too. I have a daughter and a wife who need me around. I always joke with my wife and say "at least I have a life insurance policy" which is fawking dumb of me. I'm going to stay sober until I feel like I can be a responsible adult in my personal life and not just my professional life. I pay taxes, I work hard, I own a home etc. All that is shit if I'm a drunk.

Good job and good luck. We have a similar background. I quit cold turkey for almost 5 years. For the last couple of years I have started to drink responsibly. I can have a couple of beers and a good time without getting sloppy drunk and embarrassing. I still know that I am an alcoholic, I keep that in mind everytime I drink.

You are on the right track and you will get there. Good for you for "waking up".

Try exercise, seriously.

Hobbies are great to keep your mind occupied, but exercise helps your circulation, gives you a "good" tired, and releases endorphins that make you feel better. Should help both the insomnia and depression.

I got hooked bigtime on hockey. I don't want to sound like Screwzer and Amsterdam, but it's helped me a ton--having something new to learn about and physically exhausting, but I'm in awesome shape right now and feel super.

I think I'm going to get back into fixing up old appliances. I used to rebuild/restore old lamps and stuff, stuff small enough that I could work on in the living room. Busting out the angle grinder at 10pm in the garage and working on the jeeps is what I'd love to do, but when the neighbors house is 8 feet away, I'm sure they would hate me, haha! I've got to find something to do inside the house, or at least something quiet in the garage.

Sure--but start walking, lifting weights, biking...something physical in addition to flipping appliances for fun and profit.

I've started doing that, walking the the local italian place to get supper (it's about a 20 minute walk one way, so 40 minutes total) picking up a salad or something, and walking back. I tried running/jogging, but after a few days of that, my knees don't like it, haha!

I do lift weights (not much) and do some pushups, jumping jacks and air squats in the mornings, maybe I should try doing that at night instead. I sit at a computer doing VFX all day, at the end of the day I 'm mentally tired, but physically I'm not. Doing my excercise at night would probably be good. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try

Walking is underrated. I don't walk a lot, but when I do, I enjoy it. You notice a lot of things that you never see when you're driving.

I agree--running is hard on your knees, but I did run a 21:52 5k (3 miles) this spring!

Good for you!

Lots of long term benefits from not drinking to excess, physical, personal, social.
Lots of folks in my family were full blown alcoholics. Had an Uncle who choked and died on his own puke.
My Dad was a very moderate drinker. I had only seen him tipsy twice in my life.
When I was a teenager, I went and got drunk with some buddies. Next day hung over, barfing etc.
Dad looked at me and said now is the time to choose who is in control of your life, you or booze. I can't say I've always made wise choices and have spent a few years as a several beers a day drinker too. That all pretty much stopped when my first kid was born in 1985.
We have lots of booze and beer in the house, but it sets for long periods of time before it gets used up.
Luckily the bottles don't make me feel guilty just setting there, collecting dust.
Again congrats and best wishes for your success. Your body, your family and if your lucky your friends will thank you for it.
