Day 1. Been planning a post labor day break. I cannot recall the last time I went a day. I took a week long break in 2010 I think. Tonight will be odd. Not sure what will be stranger...actually not have a beer or me thinking about not having a beer.

Is cold turkey safe? I was thinking I should have a nightcap a few days to wind it back slowly. A Dr once told me it could be dangerous to just stop. I am not really a risk to have a night cap pull me back in, my mind is made up. My concern is medical, and not me looking for an excuse to have one.

If I go a month or what ever, who knows.

You have to be one helluva alcoholic to get DTs that would be dangerous

Thx. I understated my issue, embarrassing I guess.. Doesn’t matter though. I want to take a break. am a little curious to what a few non foggy mornings in a row feel like. Or what I’ll be doing at 9pm if I’m not speeding up my drinking knowing it’s bed time soon. I couldn’t find time to work out ever because beer time always came as the #1 priority. I’ve got tons of projects that could use the extra 4-5 hours each night.

FOR REAL! The hangovers not being there is awesome. Just reminds me of how my brother in law "never gets hangovers" but somehow got altitude sickness camping at Donner Lake after drinking 5 beers. Felt better after he went home and laid on the couch for a few hours.

Now I understand those sore feelings WERE the hangovers. I "powered through it" a few times. Working out at 7am is definitely easier when you're not feeling like shit from the day before. It's easier to make the decision to workout early too. As for what to do at 9:00pm. Go to bed (seriously, this helped a lot for me), web wheel, join the Friday Loser's Club, or take a dollar amount you'd spend on beer from the bank account and put it into a jar/savings account so you can't/won't spend it. Mow the lawn, vacuum, fold laundry, prep coffee for the next morning, clean, fill windshield wiper fluid, walk around Home Depot, etc. You'll find something to do.

EDIT: 108. The current record is 110. Marathon # 7 on December 8, 2019. Boston Qualifier attempt #3. I missed the last one in April by 22 seconds. Yeah, not drinking probably had a LARGE part in that. Going back to drinking a few beers after that long just made beer not taste the same.

On day 6. I’ve been racing 4 years... got my first podium at Dirt Riot Nationals yesterday. 2nd. Did it finally all come together for me or was it because I was sober/clearer/sharper? I’ve raced on various levels of hangovers for the last 4 years.

The general consensus is thatís not huge numbers, but if youíve been at it for a long time without a healthy diet, it can cause a vitamin B deficit that can totally fuck you up when you quit. Iím headed back to work tomorrow for the first time after 3 months off from a stroke and it was something the docs were looking at as a cause. Iím 42 and unfortunately back to my old ways. Every anxiety/depression aid left me too smashed to function, so I drink.

Awesome! It's always a "did this come from not drinking" question in the back of the mind, but I usually follow it with "well this feels better than drinking" and start thinking of all kinds of professional athletes that fueled their success through drugs, sobered up, and got better.



112 days for me. New "record" since the last was 110. I have a few things going right for me. Plus this weekend it was kind of cold camping and waking up hung over would have SUCKED.

EDIT: Before all my big marathons I'd quit drinking for a week. When I raced and did well the first time I kept going with it. It made it easier to put the bottle down and even now it helps. I just know drinking won't solve anything....like bending the arm on my Wilton vise because my U Joint was not in correctly, and it's all my own fault.

that's funny. I keep thinking that there is no way not drinking had a major impact.... but I did accomplish my goal sober so....

So far the only thing I am happy about is my kids not seeing me holding a beer or ordering one 100% of the time.

I think I get more done drinking. I lost motivation the first few days. I didn't want to do anything. Yesterday I got a lot done... I grabbed an IPA at bed time because I thought I wanted one all day(the thought nagged me all day! annoying to say the least). I drank the neck over the course of an hour of bedtime netflix. Went to sleep realizing that pounding it or finishing it would gain me absolutely nothing. It got poured out this AM 4/5ths or more full.

None of that is uncommon. You'll get past that "loss of motivation" thing mostly because you'll probably tell yourself "Self...We're doing literally nothing and it isn't productive." I told my buddy all summer long "at night, when you want to grab a beer, go mow the lawn or pull weeds for the 20-30 minutes you'd spend drinking the beer, sitting on the couch doing nothing" just to point out how much can get done instead of drinking beer. Have a beer after all that stuff is done, or you win a race.

As for telling yourself drinking won't impact how well you perform....It's not really true. You just DO more while you're drinking. Drink a beer and (wash the car, mow the lawn, pull weeds, surf the internet, thinking, rebuilding a transmission, replacing axle seals in a Dana 30, etc.) isn't getting more done. It's just doing stuff.

Had a funeral for a coworker this last weekend. 49 years old and couldn't kick the booze habit. I wish everyone that is struggling with this or any other type of addiction that they will find the internal strength to overcome and retake control of their lives before it is too late. Thank you to those posting to help others, it is very appreciated.

Congrats to those that have set new personal marks in your journey. I think that becomes a integral part of the battle, as you start to care about your own personal streak, you are showing you are doing this for yourself, not anyone else. Because frankly, and I mean no disrespect with this statement: no one gives a shit how many days you have gone without a drink. Harsh, but that is the reality. Now let me contradict my own statement- I care how many days you've gone, because I can relate- but majority can't...

Pokeman- congrats on the podium finish as well as making it a week without. Please do not apologize for your daily stories or sharing, this is a great thread to dump whats on your mind as it relates to drinking/quitting. I appreciate people sharing stories as well as offering up support, it reminds me I am not alone in this battle.

St.James- sorry to hear about your recent issues. I hope you can find something that eases your pain.

H8DWINGS- thanks for continuing to share your story and congrats on hitting a new "record". Now it's easy- every day is a new record!

KDXSR5- sorry to hear about your coworker. 49 is far too young.

I'd also like to say thanks to some of the long time "quitters" that have posted in here. It is encouraging to hear from those that have 5, 10, 15, 20 years under their belts.

Didn't catch this, and as others have said don't be sorry. This is a spot you can talk about the struggles, read over others, compare yourself to others, or just say something you don't want to tell others. Don't be surprised if you get annoyed by other people drinking, asking why you aren't drinking, trying to SNEAK a drink to you, or doing none of these things. After staying up until 11:30 figuring out how to press in a U Joint last night (not mechanically inclined) I can now say I'd have spent the money for all that stuff on beer and if I HAD beer I'd have been up until 9:30 pm then felt like SHIT this morning because "It's sunday...dinner with family....drink some beer before the week starts" and today's run would probably suck more than just being sore from doing "Jeep shit" all last night instead of drinking beer. I STILL need to get my transfer case SYE kit finished and for that I apparently need a non-greasable u joint becuasae IDK WTF i'm doing. Why do I say this? Because I come to pirate to learn/find out how. Just like figuring out how to do this sober thing.

I learned I'm the "drink it all, but if I don't start I don't have to stop" type. "stealing happiness from tomorrow" and "when I enjoy my drinking I don't control it. When I control my drinking I don't enjoy it" type so it's nice knowing I'm not the only one.
