Missionary's Jeep

I am sending you a note to see if any suppliers or manufacturers would be interested in helping on a project I am involved in as well as a local off road shop. Take the time to go to the link below and see. Patrick Evans and Jeff Shellnut are missionaries to Nigeria and have been there for about five years. I have known these guys for over twenty years and they are the real deal. They have endured with a well worn Land Rover for several years and it is being replaced. They have already raised enough funds to purchase a jeep but it needs to be outfitted for real off road terrain Nigerian style. This is where there are ministering, in remote villages. We have an "Old Man Emu" 4" lift suspension kit and a set of 37" Mickey Thompsons with wheels. We are going to need a locker for the rear end as well as a reprogrammer to handle the taller tire size. Any other components available for this vehicle would be greatly appreciated. We are providing the labor to install all the parts provided and we hope others will join in on this worthy cause.

I have known these guys for a long time. The first time I helped prepare a vehicle for missions work was about 15 years ago. They took a 1974 Ford school bus and converted it to a full camper. I added a bi-fuel propane conversion to the bus and added 120 gallons fuel capacity. They drove that bus to Belize and lived in it for 4 years. They ran propane once they got across the border into Mexico since it was so cheap there. They came back to the US with the bus and restocked supplies twice while there.

Give it some thought and let me know if you can help.

Sincerely,

Buddy Gamel

I wish these guys the best, but I'm currently fundamentally opposed to helping all of the other shitholes in the world until we can get our shithole fixed.

Good luck to them.

You need to ask this guy. I'm sure just as soon as he gets his private jet from fleecing his flock , he should have a few dollars left over.

how easy is it gonna be to find parts for a jeep in niger?

shouldnt they be using a Toyota diesel or something locally available?

they could buy half of a local truck with just the cost of shipping a Jeep over there.

I'm so sick and tired of the go fund me bullshit.

How about you start with something used and not as expensive and fund the build your gawd damned self?

Never asked anyone in my life for anything, I would be too embarrassed too. Where the hell do you people come from asking for free shit?

Or are they just holier-than-thou?

And why the fawk should we fund them? I read n many emails that Nigerian princes are plenty rich.

First, 37's for dirt roads in Nigeria?

They're going to need gears badly. Along with C-gussets, Sleeves and aftermarket ball joints for those roads if they don't want the axle to bend on those rough roads.

Then they'll need at a minimum a front drive shaft for that lift. A rear one would be good insurance.

I think the JK was a terrible platform for them if they can't afford to dump $15k into it.

My uncle us a religious retard and lives in Cambodia. Every time he's state side we go through this same goat rope. He wants a big bad ass JK to get to the remote villages in the rainy season. I lay it all out for him and he sees the sticker price and all the sudden it's not as cool an idea. Tell them to sell the JK and buy something else if they want to bomb up and down dirt roads in a 3rd world country. The JK wasn't designed to take that abuse. Especially not on tires that large.

That said, my uncle is also wealthy enough to pay for said vehicle himself. Fuck people who want other people to buy them cool toys. You don't need a JK on 37's to proselytize.

What size tires did they run on the Rover? Why did they want to go with 37s on the JK? Seems like asking for trouble with a vehicle that is not well supported in that part of the world.

How about they get a Tata pickup. They come in diesel or gas, left or right hand drive, and manual transmission. They are available there already, reducing cost of shipping and service if somehing breaks. They also come with utility type beds and 2 or 4 door.

Jeeps are unreliable piles of crap here in the country they are made and parts are easy, why would you want to get on and use over there? Not to mention you will stand out, buy a hilux or a land cruiser since they are all over that country and you will blend in a bit better.

That's the preferred rig of Boko Haram, very popular.

Hey OP your plan is fucking stupid for what needs to be a reliable rig in a far away place. It sounds like a lame publicity stunt for both sides that you want funded by others by begging. So fuck you.

Save money, buy used and build cheap and reliable.

Or be like Christ (is that still what Christian means these days?) And walk where needed

What special skills do these two have that the people of Niger don't have themselves? I guess I have no idea of what misionaries do and why they are needed.

Often missionary's teach basic, literacy school stuff etc and/or offer basic medical aid and information. More involved stuff can be building facilities and doing waste and water treatment. There is plenty of opportunity to improve local communities and be truely beneficial and bring in resources that may not otherwise make it to the area.

Just don't think you need a new car to make it happen

Speak English... typically.

I know my Aunt and Uncle started a school and teach the underprivileged to read and write in both Cambodian and English. My issue with it is they do it to spread the "word of god" instead of doing just to help the people. In school they teach with bible stories and scripture. They are a non for profit but take donations. Granted, most everything they pay for themselves. But they do have churches here state side that give them money and send people over to help on mission trips. It's basically a big ploy for them to live like kings and feel all high and mighty about themselves.
