bad things to say about the HD 8.1L vortec Chevy BB?

Sits in a 2001 Silverado HD 2500 with only 16,000 miles on her.

What could it fetch / i don't have experience with a 496cid Vortec block.

Seriously good deal here? Clean longbed in white with super low miles. No other options besides the 8.1L which i believe WAS an option in Chev HD's before it was dropped in 2009. It made Class A motorhomes happy for roughly a decade..?

Subscribing. I've often thought of this motor in a 3rd gen or a 2nd gen.

Depending on the transmission, you could have a badass setup for a swap.

Edit; from what I just read, all autos were allisons.

Last of the gm BB's. They are a badass powerplant but a little on the piggy side weight wise so most people are running SB's. It's other bad habbit is crappy fuel milage.

Powerful, reliable motor. 200k easy with basic maintenance. 10-13 mpg on a good day.

Bit of a bastard motor, not a ton of aftermarket support.

Well, I've heard reports of more than eleven, but they lie.

My ex grandpa in law has one. He's had it since brand new and it's still a beast. And it gets used everyday on a farm. No major problems that he's ever told me.

2002 suburban 2500 w 8.1 and Allison, 250k from the factory with no probs. The only down side is the shitty mileage and 2+gal of oil for a change. So far it seems like you could put together a story that could come from cummins guy....but it's only a quarter million miles so far

I freaking hate gm's with a passion and even I would be over there cash in hand right now for that.

I have a 2001 Suburban 8.1. Nearly impossible to destroy. I towed 10k up the grapevine in 104 degree weather with a cracked radiator. Did not overheat.

mpg is 11 highway empty, 10.5 city, 7 towing 10k

For someone who needs heavy towing capability but not too many miles they are great. If I was towing 10,000 miles a year, the mpg would be a huge factor.

Mine has the 4l80e. Stock has a tiny trans cooler, so I modified the radiator support and put in a ford 6.0 diesel trans cooler that is about 10 times bigger. Brought my towing trans temps down by 15-25 degrees. Hottest I ever see now is about 215 going up a long grade.

a little quirky with the crank position sensor, as it takes a bit of work to change, and the cam position sensor is no longer produced, but they can be retrofitted to the newer style.

That's what i'm thinking.

The range is $3,000 to $9,000 so it could go up there...

I've got one in my 2005 work truck and it's been a great engine with two exceptions. One is it uses a quart of oil every 3000 miles. Thats not a huge problem for me though. The other thing I don't like is it developed a bad case of piston slap at about 150,000 miles but its been doing it for years with no problems because of it. It just doesn't sound good. The only repair the engine needed was the oil pan gasket needed replacing at about 190,000 miles. Other then that, the engine has been as reliable as can be. The 5 speed Allison has had zero issues. The truck pulls great when fully loaded in the mountains. The gas mileage is always 9 to 10 in a 10,000 pound truck with a service body on it. It would probably get better mileage on the highway but I never get it on the highway much. It's pretty much all stop and go short trips in the mountains. Since it was new I've ran Amsoil 5-30 full synthetic in it and the oil change light comes on right around 9,000 miles.

If I was you, for $6000 with 16,000 miles on it I would take it in a second.

decent deal
<- another one not so hot on IFS GMs

big plus if it has a manual shift t-case and base model interior (heater controls die, I would never want to own a dual zone pile of shit)

8.1

I have one in a boat, 10 years old, 450 hrs. runs great, and if I keep it below 3k on the tach. it's good on fuel.

As far as a truck............... I got nothing to add

But if one came up, I wouldn't be afraid to buy it.
