Not sure where this info came from, but it is complete BS.

Since nobody would ever lie on Pirate, I guess the "Ranger" made this up out of thin air. The Eldorado NF has several Jeep Rubicons, but they are JK;s and not on 35's. I've never seen one on the trail. The USFS has absolutely nothing to do with trail maintenance decisions as those are made by Eldorado County. Last, the county doesn't make decisions about "trailworthiness", they make decisions about maintenance based on easement, erosion, and sediment delivery.

I think the county is looking for a dependable vehicle that they can run on the trail week after week, year after year, without having to repair it constantly. Their experience with the JK's (on 35's, locked front and rear, with a winch) has been that after spending a summer on the trail they are going in for a complete rebuild.

There is so much misinformation and speculation in this thread, I don't even know where to start.

I wonder how much of this is being paid for with grants?

We had an area NW of Vegas that we developed with the local BLM office, but they changed staff so often that we stopped staying in contact with them and just used it in it's "open use" designation, and when the newbie Ranger would stop by and question us, we'd pull out our maps from THEIR office and then go about enjoying our public lands. I know a lot of folks are disenchanted with Blue Ribbon because it doesn't seem like they're having a real effect on our loss of public land usage.
THIS ^^^ I have been saying the same thing for a few years now.

I am in total agreement with you. My clarification above in no way should give anyone the impression that I am in support of building an U4 spec rig for the Eldorado county parks department.

They can use the rigs they have, or walk for all I care. I will not be supporting this grant, and will clearly voice my opposition in writing.

John you and I both know a rig like that is way over their head, in both the ability to properly operate it and maintain it. The fact that they want a 30 day return option on a 200k rig tells me they are completely misinformed.

Who wrote the grant? I'm fairly confident you know.

Example, one of the GO's bought a 4 seat Rzr, how long did it sit broken on the trail before they yanked it out? Where is it now?

Whomever advised them to spend 25+K on that was an idiot. So much money thrown at vehicles over the last 15 years, buying a rig built to the specs in the grant , is another waste, this time, in the 200k range vs 25k.

Vehicles built with those specs are anything but dependable and easy to maintain.

I suppose that could be done with drones at some point, so that a human does not need to physically go there in the middle of winter.

I have said it before, but now I care even less since I no longer live there and the Rubicon has been ruined. There are many people who act like they are on the side of the OHV users when in reality they have their own agenda. It's just easier to push their own agenda with the OHV crowd than it is with the anti OHV crowd.

I do recall that we were told for years that our "extreme" rigs were part of the problem, now they support spending tax payers money on one?

Tell me again what the BRC or the Blue Stars have done? They will tell you that without them there would be no Rubicon and you should be thankful for the dirt road that you have left.

I expected nothing less. The internets can sometimes make the line between agreeing with someone or not kinda blurry.

The OHV world is WAY under organized compared to the Sierra Club or such. Until the OHV mfg's step up with their pocket books and hire real lobbyists, and real attorneys, and continue to fight EVERY access issue, all we'll have is a few folks going to organized events and holding out their hand for a few bucks, a free burger and some Vodka.

The BLM did the same thing for the dunes, in my opinion it was so they could give anybody the keys and they have a ranger that can go anywhere we can, but they dident realize it's not the rig its experience that gets you in and out on those bad days. So that funco buggy spends half its weekends stuck or parked. When the BLM did this it made them less approachable and made more separation between them and us and never got better, it dident help just after the toy hauler showed up and a bunch of new raptors and sxs's showed up.
This is complete bullshit in the winter the low amount of people on the trail doesn't warrant a LEO on the trail. And in the summer, boots work just fine and faster then a 200k buggy with a 1$ driver.

Just a random pull off the internet...

When I saw the CHP car I was getting my Harley inspected & tagged. The cop said the gal driving was a badass. I allowed as how I probably wouldn't mind getting roughed up by her.

All of the Lotto proceeds goes to schools as promised, but they turned around and raped other areas of school funding, leaving the schools no better off than they were before the Lotto.

That's a pursuit car. Nothing new. 440 magnums, 429 interceptors, etc.

Dane, my comment was directed at your saying someone sounds like a politician. Your words speak for themselves. I agree that the rig in question is typical government stuff.

No one, not a single person addressed my comment, you can walk the entire trail in a single day in the summer if you want to.

Are you saying that RESQ is right, or that he sounds like a politician? I r confused.

If I am not mistaken the people who patrolled the trail back in the day walked, now the trail is easier and they need a badass buggy? Again, something just doesn't add up.

The other part I am not clear on is Jeeps that run the trail for a summer and need a total rebuild. Either the drivers are beating them like it's their job or this is total bullshit. This whole thing just stinks...follow the money.
