Yep. I think the regs changed not too long ago. Because I remember whenI went to school, my instructors said the same thing and I said something about rear mounted amber turn signals

I did some deeper reading, and I was actually right. Amber is permissible on trailers, but not commercial trailers. The wording is hard to follow. You have to catch that caveat in the beginning, before you reference the table.

:edit: (c) Prohibition on the use of amber stop lamps and tail lamps. No commercial motor vehicle may be equipped with an amber stop lamp, a tail lamp, or other lamp which is optically combined with an amber stop lamp or tail lamp.

Amber is just fine on the back of a trailer. Amber turn signals are standard issue as are amber strobes for oversize loads.

NNSA - National Nuclear Security Administration is not that far from you, and this is how I've been told they transport medicinal and weapons grade nuclear material.

Are they mounted on sharks or dinosaurs? If they aren't, it really isn't interesting enough to be the answer.

(c) Prohibition on the use of amber stop lamps and tail lamps. No commercial motor vehicle may be equipped with an amber stop lamp, a tail lamp, or other lamp which is optically combined with an amber stop lamp or tail lamp.

This means that a amber turn signal lamp cannot be wired for nor used as a stop or tail lamp; not that amber turn signal lamps are not allowed on commercial trailers.

IE in the picture below the amber turn signal lamp can only be used as a turn signal:

In the picture below as long as visibility and photometric requirements are met, any two or more lamps and reflectors can be combined; IE all four lamps can be Stop / Turn / Tail as long as the stop lamp is deactivated when turn signal lamp is activated.

Why is the NHTSA doing a page for Canuckian regs using FMVSS 108?

Looks like you caught on to the Ghost Fleet.

Heard of them, never any factual proof.

Sounds like 2 decoy rigs tag along.

Border crossings?

I'm wrong on this one. I'll admit that, but it goes against every single course/test I've taken. The last on was two years ago, and the instructor was very specific that all rear facing lamps must be red. I'll have to call him up and debate that now.

Dude. Some instructors just dont fuckin know. Same instructor I mentioned earlier told the class that tractors can only have a 40k gvw because truck and trailer cant be gvw'd for more than 80k. He actually told me I was wrong about my fucking Fld having a 52k gross, even after I showed him my vin plate.

Yeah, I know. This one I was familiar with, and I trusted him to be on his game. Live and learn, I guess. Fun debate, anyway.

That was a two day refresher on pre trip inspections. I wonder what else I'm wrong about.

You have to remember that the regs change so damn much that its impossible to know all od them and sometimes be in compliance.

I've learned more about tail lights today than I'll need for the rest of my life.

If you had some spare time, just follow them, see where they go. Make a weekend out of it.
