Car wreck in a snow storm. I get out and almost get hit by a car sliding by backwards. So I jump over the barrier into the median... to my surprise I was on a bridge, no median just a 100+ fall to a road below. I caught myself on the bridge when I didn’t feel any ground and pulled myself back up over from a vertical hang. Then I turn and grab my girlfriend(now wife) mid fall and pulled her up over. She was following me and jump after I did. Damn lucky I was an athlete back then or I wouldn’t have had the strength to catch myself much less her.

I jumped over a cement median to get away from other cars going by backwards. It was a 100 foot drop. I was on a bridge, thought there was a grass median and didn't know it.

This all happened about 1min after hit we a 4' tall cement bridge guard rail at 55MPH. We were very disoriented.

wrecked, got out. cars where going by backwards and side ways, piling up at night. We found a break in the action and decided to get out of my truck and on the other side of the median so we'd be protected. I got out and quickly jumped over this 4' tall cement wall. I caught myself with finger tips on the cement edge when I didn't feel ground after falling a few feet, climbed and pulled myself up. Just as I got back over the barrier I saw my wifes coat go by as she jumped over to follow me. She saw me disappear over the cement median and thought I was standing on the other side, so she went over. I grabbed the back of her ski coat and she hung there while I pulled her back over. she was very confused as to what or who pulled her up, she thought I was standing on the other side waiting for her, never saw me climb back over. Adrenaline and being a gym junky is the only way I was able to catch myself and then grab her coat and pull her up from hanging with her back to the wall.

It was 30 min later when a car went under the bridge and we saw headlights that we realized it was a bridge and what just happened. At the time we both just thought the ground was futher down than we thought, maybe 10' or so.

Oh so many....

My young mechanic days I had no trainer. So I figured out everything the hard way.

Had a long slight hill of a driveway. Had a bad u-joint. ONCE!

Truck in park - check!
Unbolt driveshaft - check!
Pull down driveshaft - Holy shit!!!

I hollered for help the entire time I was crawling on my back as fast as I could trying to hold that driveshaft to keep it from turning as me and the truck went down the driveway. I jumped out in the nick of time as it got too fast to hold as the truck went on down the drive to rest in the ditch across the street. The front cross member would have cut me in about a 2/3'rd's.

(posted here after the fact for an answer once for the safe way to do it, some may recall)

But I went to cut the top out of a 55 gallon barrel with a torch ONCE! That unknowingly what was ever in it, must have been racing fuel at one time? It barely missed my head as it went off into the night sky to be found on the other side of my shop the next day. The burns on my arms were 2'nd degree that turned closer to 3'rd by the time they eventually healed.

Which reminds me when I was 7 and playing with gas. ONCE!

If you ever get burned by a fuel, you must wash it off like crazy so that it don't keep burning through your skin all the way to the bone. Although you can't see it, you have to imagine you have anti-sieze on you as you wash. Just dunking it in water does nothing. It will keep burning you. By the time I went to the hospital, it took a skin graph off my ass and several weeks to recoup.

walking home from bus stop when i was kid. walking in dirt on outside of a sweeping turn. Highschool kids driving a Squarebody chevy at high speed ran off the road, I looked directly at the right side headlight coming at my face and stepped out of the way in a cloud of dust.

Man some of you guys have been through some shit. Never been in a bad accident, never shot myself in the ass, never had a medical event, and have played hard my whole life. Crashed dirt bikes, MTB's (landed on my head at least once), ATC's (of course), got caught in rips in Baja, had a gun pointed at me momentarily by a crazy fucker that was going to shoot up the gym, got hit in the head with a chunk of 4x4 from a moving truck while road cycling, etc., just never got hurt.

I do know some really impulsive and careless individuals that have had more than their share of near death experiences.

I have been told many times by electricians that I should have died and that 80% of people do die when that happens.

The night I got diagnosed with type-1 diabetes my friend I was working with kept waking me up at my desk. I drove to the hospital shortly after because I thought I had some virus. My blood sugar was 1600!!! The doctor said I should have been dead. If my friend had not woken me up I would have died from high blood sugar. That was 15 years ago. Fuck diabetes!!!

I had a bad sinus infection for a month. I lost about 50lbs. Was pissing every ten minutes. I had no idea what was happening to me.
While at work my shipping and receiving guy woke me up at my desk. He said I looked like shit and should go to the hospital. I agreed after I vomited multiple times on the loading yard.
I drove myself to the hospital in my Jeep with my vision all blurry and hit a yield sign on the way.
The ER Dr tells me my blood sugar is 1600 and I have Type 1 diabetes.
Normal blood sugar is 80-120.
If I had been left to sleep at work I would have died. I was told I should have been dead regardless.
I still thank Chris every time I see him for waking me up that night at work.

My misses have been pretty run of the mill.
-propane explosion in an RV as a kid, a couple weeks of debridement in the burn unit after.
-driving a Land Rover Series II up the AlCan, fell asleep and woke up on 2 wheels in the median, headed for the gap between two bridges. The trailer full of welding stuff had come loose and scattered tanks, but nothing blew.
-driving too fast down a country road, didnt make the 90* turn at the bottom of the hill, did a nice controlled drift through the scrub, mowing down saplings going full sideways. If there had been a tree, it would have ended badly.

Not sure as these count as near death, but they've come to mind reading this thread.

My heart infection left me feeling like I might drop over dead. Heart attack/shoulder pain is so intense it's crippling. The worst part was laying in a hospital bed for 20 hours, hooked up to oxygen, two IV's, the works, waiting for a doctor to come in and tell you what's going on. That was an eye opener to life.

This past winter I was out coyote hunting on a weekday night. It was just before 8:00, and I was driving to my second spot. All the sudden I spot headlights in front of me, and I'm thinking, why are they pulling into that driveway like that? Then I realized they were headed straight for me. I have no idea how I accessed the situation so quickly, but I knew no one was in the left lane (oncoming traffic), and I swerved in my truck. Moments later I heard a crash. The college kid in a Zuk behind me didn't dodge the truck and took a Dodge Ram head on.

He walked away, but it could've been so much worse. When I went back to help him, this old woman got out, drunk as fawk, staggering everywhere.

Thankfully, all I have to tell.

- Supposedly died in the Hospital when I was 8 during my cancer treatment.

- Nearly drowned when I was 11-12 or so. At a buddies house, they had gone out of the pool and gone outside. I stepped off the shallow end of the pool into the deep end and started sucking water. I don't remember the time line but some point recent to that we had a Navy recruiter present at our school and they showed the Navy SEALS in the pool with the concrete blocks and how they would push off the floor, get a breath and repeat. So I did that until I got back to the pool edge.

I got hit by a truck... will always be fucked up from it. Nobody at the hospital understands why my bones didn't displace and rip my internal organs apart. My lungs both exploded and caused my heard to be crushed under pressure, collapsing my aorta. Lots of broken bones. Still have paralysis. Spine is shaped like an S.

I've been an adrenaline junkie my whole life and forgot more times that I could have died by inches, but two stick out in my mind as THE ones that went too far.

June 28 1997 - Was going to be jump 13 of skydiving. Riding in a Twin Bonanza plane with my girlfriend at the time that had never been in a plane before, going for her tandem skydive. Lost power in the right engine after takeoff. Felt like it was slow motion. (we face the rear of the plane on the floor) I turn to look and one jump master motions to stay seated, as I am turning back around, the guy next to me is tightening his seatbelt. I thought that was a great idea, so I started doing such. I look to my right out the window and see the treeline. I black out. (concussion) Wake up running from the burning plane. The trees had ripped off the roof, the left wing was sitting next to the right wing on fire. At the hospital during release (I got a gash on the top of my head and some bruising on my legs from the seat belt) several people told me thanks for helping them out of the plane and holding the instrument cluster up to get it off of one of the co-pilots.
Come to find out, that plane was commissioned by the Army that was suppose to take off in a certain distance and be at a certain weight or something. Well someone crossed the figures and when the army took off with their guys, it crashed, but everyone lived, so the army decided to buy the planes anyway.
One thing that messed with my head is a few weeks after the crash, a mother called the drop zone and said that she sent her kid to his/her room to pray on the day of the crash and when the kid got back, she asked what god said, and the kid replied with "hold on, I have to help some people in a plane crash"

Sport bike mountain ride with 11 people. (me and 2 others frequented this loop and were the most experienced)
I ended up leading the group. One guy usually leads the group to keep the straight line speeds down, because we were all for the curves, not the straights. That guy was in the back showing a buddy of his, lines to follow when riding and braking points.
Anyway about an hour into the ride, we start our decent into a valley. I don't remember anything after that for the next few hours, so I just have memories of what people told me happened.
There is a chicane in the road. A left hander. We figure my front tire got light going into the left hander and I low-sided into the guard rail. Bike stopped and I went under, hitting one upright with my helmet and the other with my left leg.
blah blah blah(to keep the story shorter), I woke up in the hospital with broken femur, broken scapula, cracked C7 vertebra, 3 broken ribs, concussion. I was wearing full leathers and back protector. No road rash at all. Doc says I likely would have died if I hadn't had all that on. I still have most of the equipment. I feel it has earned it's keep. The helmet hangs in my garage to remind me.

Did anyone notice the dates of the incidents? FUCKING FREAKY IMO

Maybe it doesn't qualify for this thread per se, since I wasn't actually IN the accident, but still makes me sick to my stomach to think about it.....

Creates galaxies, can't talk on the phone while allowing a plane to crash.

My granfather drowned in finnon lake when he was about 7.(back in a day when It was ok to let your kid wander around the property without supervision.) His dad had a dream the night before about it and when his mom couldnt find him his dad knew where he was at. Don't remember how long he was in water but his dad worked on him until paramedics arrived and they worked on him. They pronounced him dead and started packing it up. His dad kept on trying and he came back. I believe its from that but hes got a incredible memory and zero filter.

My dad started logging at 14. When he was 18 he had a funny feeling for months he couldn't explain. He ran a D6 and set his own chokers. He backed up to a skid, jumped off and ran behind the cat to set his choker. When he stood up he heard a squeek and new what it was. The cat had a high spot in the brakes and it rolled back.
It pinned him between the winch drum and a tree. Pushed his organs into his chest and some part of the winch exploded his thigh and other injuries. It looked like a shark had bitten him. The landing man got worried when he could hear the cat idling as my dad never stopped for very long. They pulled the dozer off of him and took him to the hospital. Doctors couldnt believe he was awake and alive.
It took hundreds of staples and some surgeries to piece him back together. Doctors didnt think he would ever walk again or at least have a gimp leg. He still walks to this day with no limp. He said just before the cat hit him he knew he was going to die. After it hit him he said it was really peaceful. No pain no shock just acceptance. He said his funny feeling was gone after that.

Even though there not directly me I wouldnt exist if any of those had proved fatal. kinda wierd to think about it. When i was about 18 i was at the river with a bunch of friends and a guy that i had just went a couple rounds with a day or 2 before and we still had a fued going.
We where sitting on top of a cliff around 60ft above the water you could jump off of into a deep hole.
I was sitting near the edge talking to someone on my right. It happened fast but i remember making eye contact with the guy i was talking to and he started getting farther away. I was sitting on a big sheet of moss and sand that had broke loose and was headed over the cliff. By the time i realized what was happening i was headed over the cliff. I knew the hole we jumped into was nearby so i half ass tried to push off from the cliff to try and land in it. The guy that i had just got in a fight with some how seen what was happening and cought me in a chokehold as i was going over.
How he held me by the throat in one arm and held onto the cliff ill never know. I was already over the cliffs edge and kept trying to kick off so i could jump. I really wasnt sure if he was trying to help me or strangle me. Somoene helped him pull me back up. I was nowhere near the hole and if i would have jumped it was nothing but flat rocks below me. I owe my life to him and have been good friends since. Not as intresting as some of the stories ive read here but i thought they where worth posting.

When my brother and I were 9-10 we went to Globe, AZ. and spent the summer with my dad. My dad, step mom, 2 of my cousins and us all went to the river outside of Globe to go swimming (cant remember the name of the river) you had to drive across a shallow ford in the river to get to the parking area. After you cross then your on the opposite side of the river from town.

The river is super shallow and lazy but there are pools around the rocks deep enough to go under water and jump off of..esp for 10 year old kids. It a beautiful hot typical AZ day. not a cloud in the sky.

We're all out there farting around in a pool in the middle of the river, jumping off a rock that's about 4 feet out of the water..My dads up on the bank by the van just sitting there watching us play...For no apparent reason and with no other warnings he heard a voice in his head tell him that we needed to get out of the water. He yells "hey you guys get out of the water" being 10 years old we don't get out right away. My dad was not a yeller at all...but on this day he was like "get your blanky blank asses out of the water right now". So we do.

We're are no sooner up on the bank by the van standing around and we start to hear this giant ROAR coming from up stream around the bend. It gets louder and closer. We look up stream and see this GIANT wall of water come flying down the river. It looks like a solid wall of chocolate milk stuffed full of dead trees and all kinds of debris. The rock we were just jumping off is completely buried under the water now..the flat area you drive across is now like 3 feet deep and triple as wide as it was.

We wait to see if the water recedes but it just keeps getting higher. then it starts raining and getting dark. There's a back road off the other side of the river, but its a single track that follows along the edge of the river for miles before you can cut back and get to pavement /town. Dad decides were gonna drive it. It took hours. I remember he wouldn't let any of us fall asleep in case we had to get outa the van fast. I remember he stopped once and put chains on the van. He took his boots off when he was finished and left them on the floorboard by the slider door. I remember they were totally covered in mud. I also remember we saw a silver or gray fox in the headlights while we were crawling down that road.

Cut out climbing a pole back on June 26th 1975. Fell 45 feet onto ground as hard as concrete. Shattered left leg, broke my pelvis in three places, broke three vertebrae in my lower back and got a concussion from hitting my face against my climber hook strapped on my broken left leg. The fall put 2 -12 inch long splinters in under my left pectoral muscle and excited next to my collarbone, almost stabbing me in my left ear.

Spent 6 weeks in the hospital and a year and a half in PT learning to walk normal again. Back is is still screwed up and I don't bend in my lower back anymore. My left foot is cocked out 7 degrees. My left leg in 1.25 inches shorter than my right leg. But I've learned to walk without a limp, unless I'm really tired. I use 2 Dr Shoals arch supports in my left shoe that help.

2 years after the fall I climbed to the top of that same pole and spit on the top of it. It was my first pole after the Dr released me to climb again. I climbed poles another 34 years after that day.
Climbed many 110 foot poles over the years with guys who had never worked that high. They were scared shitless! I liked working up there. I was good at it and always comfortable climbing poles. I loved bucket trucks too, but pole climbing is a lot harder to do well. I was cat walking the pole I fell off of and had rotated to the left to clear my partners hands when my hook let go.

I've fought back problems since that day.

Then there was that night I got hit by a lightning strike and knocked out of my bucket during a hard lightning storm. (Hung by my safety harness)

My grunt got me down and got my heart going again.
Power Linemen are a different kind of people.

Coded in the hospital one time while I was in there fighting pneumonia. The nurse just happened to be in the room when I quit breathing and passed out. She jumped on top of me and started CPR on me right away. I was out of my body and watching her from the upper corner of my room until she got me breathing again. I could feel the gates of heaven behind me. I was ready to go. Then blink, I'm back in my bed with this cute, but very short nurses mouth on mine.

That's about as " Near DEATH" as I want to be again.
I never lost consciousness after the fall, and don't remember anything about the lightning strike, but I can still taste the nurses chewing gum she had in her mouth. Weird!
