This. The kid could have been gone and in the cage in a few seconds. I have no problem with killing the gorilla, endangered or not.

I didn't see any extreme violence from the gorilla in that video....

Yep, it apparently has an "interactive" section, too...

Can't really make anything completely foolproof, nature compensates by making smarter fools.

Only recourse is to ban all zoo's, it's for the children...

Yeah after seeing the video my opinion on them shooting it changes completely. The original article made it sound like the gorilla was throwing the kid all over the place or something. In the video the gorilla doesn't look the slightest bit aggressive. If anything he was being very gentle with the kid. Given the size of the gorilla that's got to be intentional. That kid would be dead in seconds if the gorilla wanted to hurt him.

Shooting should be standard procedure at any chimp-out.

He was a black male with long unkempt hair, was wearing no clothing, and refused to speak English or acknowledge instructions. I think they made the right call shooting him. I'm sure toxicology will come back that he was on PCP or ice.

He was sniffing the gorilla glue.

We should ban the assault long rifle that's killing gorillas everywhere... it probably has the super suppressed wood stock and militarized bolt action.

This whole situation reminds me of this joke.

A Harley rider is passing the National Zoo in Washington, DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage.

Suddenly, a huge, hungry lion reaches out and grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside his cage.

lionThe biker jumps off his Harley, sprints past the little girl’s screaming parents to the cage and punches the lion square on the nose.

The stunned lion releases the little girl and staggers backward, whimpering in pain. The biker snatches the little girl back to safety and returns her to her terrified parents who thank him endlessly.

A reporter for the Washington Post witnessed the whole event. “Sir,” he says to the Harley rider, “that was the bravest, most gallant thing I’ve seen a man do in my entire life.’

“Why, it was nothing, really,” says the Harley rider modestly. “The lion was behind bars. I saw this little girl in danger and I just reacted instinctively.”

“Well, I’ll make sure your heroism won’t go unnoticed,” the reporter responds. “I’m a reporter for the Washington Post and I’ll make sure this story is on the front page of tomorrow’s paper. Tell me what do you do for a living and what political affiliation is.”

“I’m a U.S. Marine,” the biker says proudly, “and a Republican.”

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the Washington Post to see news of his actions and sees this headline on the front page:

US MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

The kid didn't just fall into the enclosure. Other guests stated they heard the kid saying several times that he wanted to play in the water and his parents kept telling him no. The kid then crawled under under a fence and through a couple bushes and fell into the enclosure. Now, I don't have a four-year old, but to me, when a child is that young, it's the parents' responsibility to keep tabs on the kid at all times. He had to figure out a way to get into the enclosure. Parents weren't paying attention for a pretty long time.

Shame that a gorilla had to be killed because of the parents' inattention.

While I agree with your sentiment, it would have taken a couple seconds for that gorilla to get pissed and kill the kid. That's why they didn't tranquilize it in the first place. Sadly, the only sure way to keep the gorilla from going from zero to pissed off was to kill it. The zoo did the right thing, but it certainly sucks that they had to kill a gorilla because of bad parenting.
