ISIS USES U.S. MISSILE TO SHOOT DOWN RUSSIAN HELICOPTER

Two Russian airmen were killed Friday after their helicopter was shot down by ISIS using American weaponry over Syria on Friday, Interfax News agency said, quoting Russia’s defense ministry.

According to the defense ministry, ISIS militants, hit the airmen’s Mi-25 assault helicopter with a U.S.-made TOW heavy anti-tank missile, a weapon that uses guidance from a ground station and is used by the United States military.

The helicopter was taken down when it was advancing on ISIS fighters near Palmyra. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.

“According to information we have, the terrorists used an American TOW,” Interfax News Agency quoted an unknown Russian military source.

The Russian Defense Ministry released a statement on the attack:

“The crew received a request from the Syrian unit’s command to strike the advancing fighters.

The captain, Ryafagat Khabibulin, made a decision to attack the terrorists.

The skillful actions of the Russian crew thwarted the terrorists’ advance.

When the helicopter’s ammunition was spent and it changed its course to the opposite direction, it was shot down by terrorists from the ground and crashed in an area controlled by the Syrian government army.”

A translated statement from the ISIS affiliated Amaq News Agency reads:

“By Allah’s grace alone, the soldiers of the Khilafah launched an attack with heavy weapons.

The soldiers of the Khilafah shot down a Russian helicopter as it attempted to raid their locations, which led to destroying it and killing those on board and all praise is due to Allah.”

Russian newspapers that reported the link between the missile and the United States did not mention how ISIS obtained the weapon.

No shit! Especially since they're not laser guided... Hence the 'W' in TOW which is for wire

Except it wasn't a Syrian MI-25, and it wasn't a U.S. TOW missile that shot it down.

Quote:
On Monday, the Kommersant newspaper reported that military sources “claim that the reports [of the attack on the helicopter] concern not the old Syrian Mi-25, but the new Russian Mi-35M (several of which were deployed to Khmeymim in March 2016).” A military analyst with ties to the Russian Defense Ministry who asked not to be identified by name in order to speak candidly said that he also believed the helicopter was an Mi-35M, not an Mi-25.

The Conflict Intelligence Team, a Russian open-source investigating team that uses data from social networks to report on the Russian military, said the helicopter “had non-retracted landing gear and short wings, which are distinct features of a Mi-35M helicopter.” But the post also made a controversial claim: that the helicopter may have been downed by friendly fire rockets from a wingman.

“During combat, the leader could have gotten into the line of fire of the … helicopter that followed it a bit above,” the report said, noting that the gunship launched unguided rockets shortly before it was shot down. “This explains why [the Islamic State] did not publish a video of their missile launch.”

Jeremy Binnie of IHS Janes said it’s difficult to discern exactly what’s happening in the video, though in the frame after the explosion on the Mi-35’s tail rotor, there appears to be a jet of smoke shooting away from the blast, something he believes to be the remnants of the projectile moving past the helicopter. According to Binnie, this indicates that whatever hit the helicopter came from the front, not from the rear as the Conflict Intelligence Report claimed.
Russia lied!

So what?

Unless Tony Stark addressed it "Deliver to ISIS COD", who cares what they scrounged?

Don't be a cunt. They're guided by optical sensors relative from the sight to the tip of the Missle. The "W" is for "wire guided" which relates to how the data is transmitted, not the guidance. Read up.

Well, IIRC Iran has been developing TOW systems for 20 years as well.

Good.

Should piss off Putin and he'll probably do something about it.

Unlike the US government that is funding Isis....

Again, "Fly by wire" is not how the TOW Missles are guided. "FBW" relates to how aircraft are controlled, replacing manual controls wire electronics. The "Wire" is how controls are transmitted.

The picture I had in my head was from the LAW rocket, pretty much any 6th grader could pick it up and figure out how to fire it. I'd think the TOW would be more sofisticated but maybe have the same concept ?

Not much harder put target on sights, flip off safety/arm, pull trigger, keep target in sight till boom.

In its most basic form it is stupid simple...just as simple as the law right up to the point you fire it it... Law rocket you drop it and move on where the tow you have to keep the sight on the target as it is guided munitions. The later generations (like IEATRKS84 is referring to) has "bolt on" accessories that provide enhanced optics (thermal/IR) and RTAS goodies.

As a kid I got to use a TOW simulator at a national guard public deal. The guy operating it gave me two directions, press the trigger when the sight is on the target and keep the sight on the target til it blows up. I was hitting just about everything they had in the simulation. If I was able to do it as a kid no doubt anyone could use one.
