Not sure how I missed this. It hits close to home, since my parents place got flooded out a few years ago. This is literally the worst time of the year for me to take off work.

THIS.

I used to work for a flood restoration company. For what it's worth, we only got 3" of water inside my parents house, and we took out 18" of drywall and more insulation underneath. It's always better to take a little more than you think you need, the amount of work will be the same either way. Alcohol can help kill mold and speed the drying process. There are industrial mold killers that need to be sprayed on just about everything afterward. If there are cabinets that may be staying that cannot move, get a hole saw and speed hole that baseboard like crazy to allow air flow. Fans, fans, and more fans if you can get them.

FEMA is a PITA to deal with. Have everything in order because they will try to deny you... they denied me last October and I didn't have flood ins.

they are just a fed funded insurance company. always deny the first claim/check.

they operate on a system, know that system and work that system to the best of your abilities.

This is probably common knowledge but the water line on walling is an indicator of only the moisture on the wall, where capillary rise (within the wall, absorption) is likely to be 20% higher, or more. FWIW.

Looks like you guys are pulling it together in true pirate fashion!

Should all land at a decent time around October if that works for a assesment/rebuild trip.

Can load up my 6x14 trailer, anyone who wants to bum on the way through from des moines to LA, run and gun for a few days and return.

I'm subbed but keep me in the loop with what goes down.
I'm north of ya (MN), so I'll gladly meet in Des Moines and ride with (and help with gas, etc).

my MIL works for FEMA during these types of things, and got called out to LA after all of this, but had to decline the deployment due to schedule conflicts. She just got back from south TX during all the flooding down there recently.

But, if anyone needs to know anything specific about the process, or has any questions at all regarding FEMA, please let me know and I can get you what you need.

No prob. Or, if the southern folks got all the materials/tools covered, you can hop in with me and save fuel versus a truck/trailer.

My childhood home was flooded and destroyed in 2006. It was a nightmare to deal with the insurance, but, as has been posted already, documentation is a must. If you think you took enough pictures, take more.

On the clean up side-- dog food is probably the worst thing to get wet. Remove it as quickly as possible as it will create a huge mess.

Since most homes in LA don't have basements, make sure to access the crawl space and make sure all insulation is torn out and the foundation is good. And get air circulating under the house as soon as possible.

For old pictures and photo albums, it is almost better to leave them in a tub of clean water until you have the time to properly dry them. Simply placing them outside in the sun will damage them.

Nothing electrical that has been wet can be saved.

Get the mud out as quickly as possible. Once it dries, it is much harder to get out.

Hand tools-- wash them off and put them immediately in a bucket of oil. Worry about them later.

Get a FEMA trailer as quickly as you can. They suck but better than nothing and at least you are on site in a clean place to sleep.

Good luck.

After having a fire in my house this year, I am still not sure what is worse, a fire or a flood. I lean towards flood because the water gets everywhere and the clean up is such a pain in the ass.

Perhaps, but at least you could drop a cinder block in the bed of a cummings without fear!

Just sent some funds on paypal. I wish we could come help out but with our daughter's situation (she's in the beginning phases of cancer treatment) that's probably not going to be possible. Best of luck and we'll be thinking about you in Lake Charles.

@rockmup @TJGreg5 @Brimmstone

im looking at getting a bit of mold killer/preventer (concrobium mold killer) and getting it to a fellow pbber thatll be heading that way, can anyone shoot him a text that has his digits, or get his attention this way? im curious if he has a preference on whats used, if hes an organic only dude or any worry of pets/littles ones etc.

my next questions i was able to specifically find was how far does 1 gallon go? whats the coverage? and does rockmups house have crawlspace or is it just slab on grade? water/mud or just water infiltration? trying to ascertain a few things to send some aide

I think he said earlier it was a slab so he's not as concerned with replacing the flooring at this point, focused on drywall and such.

We lost everything we had to floodwater after hurricane Betsy. My grandparents lost to Camille. Katrina got some money from me. It sucks losing the stuff you have gathered over your lifetime
I'm still getting heavy rain. I will finish the job I'm on in the next couple of days, hopefully after that, I'm good for hauling, towing or anything else he needs let me know what you need.

I think I'm about 3 hours from him, if I can get through the water around my place. lots of flooded roads and road closures
