2 stroke Detroit diesels

I bought this 1973 Peterbilt to use on my Ranch, will be pulling a cattle pot and hay trailer occasionally. It has the 8v71 with a turbo rated at 350 hp, and 13 speed. I have ordered an adapter for a spin on oil filter, and ordered some straight 40 weight engine oil. Is there anything special I should know about this setup? Seems to be a very solid truck for its age. Pic for reference.

find someone to adjust the rack travel properly.

they used them in boats too, so maybe someone that works at a marina.

It's not a Cummins so don't run low rpms or let it bog down. They're made to run fast.. They don't call them screamin Jimmy's for no reason. I wouldn't fuck with the rack unless it has a rough/lopey idle at start or doesn't seem to be running well. If you do have the rack adjusted, make sure it's someone who knows wtf they are doing.

Yes, get that working. The runaways on these things are impressive...

Sweet truck for sure. I've never had the pleasure of having to listen to an 8V71 through the doghouse of a cabover. I can only imagine how fucking awesome that sounds.

we had a fire engine with a 6v92t in it and when I joined the dept. I laughingly asked if it had any oil in it since it wasn't smoking or leaking. I was told they just checked it about 30 engine hours ago but I should check it.

2 gallons of 40w later and it was full on the dipstick again, and leaking and smoking.

The truck has since been sold but nothing will get my blood pumping like setting 12" away from a detroit running on the governor on the way to a fire at 2am with just a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum diamond plate between me and the engine. Deafening doesn't even begin to describe it.

When I was in Tech school, we had an instructor tell us about one that ran away. He said all they had was a text book so they shoved it in front of the intake. That worked, after it sucked the textbook through the blower.

This thing is surprisingly quiet. It has a pretty big muffler on it. It runs great, no lopey idle, fires off at the slightest touch of the starter button.

I run a 671t 12 hours a day. Like everyone else said they like to run fast. It might sound like its gonna blow the fuck up but it won't. Everyone says to run 40w in them. I run 15w40 no ill effects seen. I run mine in a genset application so it is running full bore all day. If you can stand the noise they are tough to beat longevity wise.

Interesting, I've heard multiweight will knock bearings out in short order.

In order to properly drive a 2 stroke Detroit, first, get into a huge fight with your wife, then slam your thumb in the door, then spill your coffee on something important. You drive that engine like you hate it, and you're trying to rip it out of the truck.

Whilst I've never actually seen it happen, they can start and run backwards.

I worked on the 6V53T's in the USMC and we only used 15W-40 in them. The only time I saw a spun bearing was when a boot used 80W-90 on a fresh rebuilt motor....

Find an old timer who can set the racks and governors in his sleep. Makes it a completely different motor.

Like said, when these suckers run away it's no joke. I've seen clipboards sucked into motors, books, entire fire extinguishers, bags of rags ect. I've also seen when gaskets are completely blown out and the motor runs away-you can't stop it. Shut the air supply off and it'll pull air from every seam in the motor. Cut the fuel and it'll just use the engine oil until it's gone. Your only real bet is a bottle of Halon at that point. So make sure your shut-off works and works well.

I've seen them run backwards and run away backwards. I don't remember what the common issue was that caused it, but 90% of the time it's someone inexperienced.

Coming off the starter button too early, or running low on air pressure to the starter. Piston approaches TDC, ignites the fuel charge,but instead of continuing the standard rotation,the piston travels backwards.

The truck has a big muffler you say? Take that fucker off and replace it with a piece of 10" culvert pipe.


The fire department my brother is on has an old cabover like that one that pulls their dozer. Dual 6" straight pipes up the back of the cab. I've seen the smoke coming over the crest in a hill before the truck came into view before when she's wound tighter than an 8 day clock.
