My wife was telling me yesterday that her aunt and uncle are expecting a total loss on their ocean-front condo in Crescent Beach, Fl.

They relocated to Jacksonville yesterday with some relatives.

My sisters place on the inter coastal in Jacksonville is all boarded up for the storm and they moved 7 miles inland to live with friends until it passes. She is in evac area A and Storm surge area 1, so things don't look great for the house.

You know things are serious now.

Waffle House Index and Hurricane Matthew - Business Insider

25 Waffle Houses closed amid Hurricane Matthew — here's what that means about the storm

There are a bunch of unusual ways you can track what's happening in the economy.

And one of the more popular informal measures is the so-called "The Waffle House Index" — an indicator that is actually unofficially used by FEMA.

Here's the gist of it: Waffle House restaurants notoriously stay open during natural disasters. So if the diner closes during an event, that suggests it was a really bad natural disaster with devastating effects on the economy. And on the flip side, if it stays open and serving a full menu, damage was relatively limited.

As a historical reference point: after 2011's Hurricane Irene, 22 Waffle Houses lost power in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Only one wasn't open by the Wednesday after the storm passed through — a particularly hard hit location in coastal Virginia.

"If you get [to a place where a disaster hit] and the Waffle House is closed? That's really bad," said FEMA administrator Craig Fugate back in 2011.

As of Friday, 8:01 a.m. ET, Waffle House's official twitter account tweeted that 25 restaurants had been closed across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina amid Hurrice Matthew.
Update - 25 restaurants closed in FL, GA & SC #Matthew
— Waffle House (@WaffleHouse) October 7, 2016

Waffle House had been planning to stay open during the height of the hurricane, which was expected to hit Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a statement on Thursday warning residents living in evacuation zones to leave immediately or risk death because of the impending hurricane.

“We’re a 24-hour restaurant, so oddly enough shutting down is a big deal for us,” Waffle House’s Vice President of Culture Pat Warner told FoxNews.com on Thursday.

“When it comes to making the final decision, we let our operations team on the ground, like individual restaurant managers, make the final decision based on local conditions. But our job [as corporate officials] is to give them all the support they need to stay open.”

Florida Sheriff: We'll Need Body Bags If People Don't Evacuate - NBC News

Florida Sheriff: We'll Need Body Bags If People Don't Evacuate

The top lawman in a Florida county that could get walloped by Hurricane Matthew warned Thursday that they'll need body bags if the holdouts who refuse to evacuate don't get out of town.

"People do not seem to get it and are not leaving," a frustrated Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said. "I'm not saying this to be theatrical ... I asked my captain of detectives if he had body bags because if we get 140 mph winds in mobile home parks, we are going to have fatalities."

Further north, in St. Lucie County, Sheriff Ken Mascara said Matthew is not a storm to take lightly.

"We've dealt with storms in the past," he said. "We've dealt with [Hurricanes] Charley, Frances, Jean, Wilma. This is like none of those."

If this thing doesn't ever make landfall or weakens significantly before it does, the alarmist are going to be pisssssssed. Gonna have to add another year to the record books for no major hurricane strikes.

I've spoken to Sheriff Snyder, he's a good guy. He was saying in the follow-up questions, if the people who don't leave their mobile homes that are 10' from the river and we get hit by a cat5 there will be casualties. Probably very accurate. He's not a needless drama kind of guy. Google map riverside mobile home park in jensen beach. Places like that with old people and idiots in them.

IMO, we got lucky.

You don't think the media would take what someone says out of context to further the story they "want" to tell, do you?

Also looks like storm surge is going to coincide with high tide (which is that area is one of the most significant tidal changes on the east coast). Good luck Frank.

Saw a post from a FB buddy in Beaufort that 'low tide never happened.' Yikes.

Edit: this is a pic '2 hours from low tide' and apparently the water stopped getting lower.
