In Hawaii we off-roaded a FWD GM shitbox on fire roads up mountains and through creeks. Avis never knew.

I've rented 4wd Expeditions, Titans, Escapes, and F-150s from Enterprise. It does seem that the stand alone locations have better selection than the airport ones. Plus most of them will come pick you up anyway. It does seem to make a difference who the staff is. There is a manager at my local Enterprise who is awesome and will generally transfer in something for me if he doesn't have it. When our 4Runner got totaled I said I wanted a 4wd SUV while it was being fixed/replaced. He couldn't find one but put me in a 2wd Tahoe and called me a week later and said he got in a Expedition for me. Should have kept the Tahoe... I hated that fucking Expedition compared to the Tahoe.

I'd check the tires before I rented a car that was going to go over a pass or 2 in the winter. Even though the passes OP will be driving aren't that bad, I've seen cars crashed off of them, as I drive them often, usually in just rear wheel drive with decent tires. I don't lock in 4wd unless it's pretty bad.

I work with several companies based in Denver that rent vehicles to drive up here. In the winter they always come in 4wd trucks and SUVs. The majority use Enterprise. Make sure the rental guys throw a snow brush/scraper in for you. Best of luck!

There was a thread in the tow forum about renting a tow vehicle for KOH.

I believe he used Enterprise and they gave him a 4x4 F250.

Might've even been a diesel.

Book a wrangler. Solves this issue all together. Highly doubt any large rental places would have an old enough jk to have only 2wd.

Rented 4wd Tahoe, terrain, Subaru, qx56, expedition and navigater all in ABQ or Denver. Not sure why it wouldn't be an option for you. Hertz and enterprise. Iirc they own most of the other brands and even some small airports share the same car pool across a bunch of companies. The navigator was from Alamo but had a hertz key tag. Or
Something like that.

Enterprise truck rental, not the normal "we'll pick you up" reservation BS. We use them for business runs and I always get a big 3 diesel 3/4 ton 4x4 truck.
A bit more $$, but guarantee you'll get a 4x4.

Wondered how this deal worked out as I drove on some super slick highway roundtrippin' to Salida and back yesterday and Breckenridge today. I even locked in 4 wheel drive after spinning more than accelerating in Buena Vista yesterday evening.

Did you have to hand over your man card temporary with license and insurance information?

This makes sense. When I would fly into CO and Green Bay they never had 4x4's always some cute little cars. While I wanted a 4x4, it's a rental who cares?
If it ends up in a ditch, they will bring you another.

LOL...considering we actually reserved a shitbox economy car, and ended up with the Liberty because they were out of everything else, I didn't complain, but yeah, the liberty was pretty gay. Still, it had 4wd and we used it.
