I love that area, I've spent some time in june lake, silver lake, white mountains, whitney portals, mammoth. I'd head to death valley for a day or two. Mahogany smoked meats for jerky and pine nuts, and they have a deli now.

Sorry for the late entry, but info for next time.

Mountain rambler brewery has some pretty good brews and the completo burger is good. Perrys pizza has some stellar appetizers, I recommend the stuffed mushrooms and deep fried artichoke hearts. Their pizza is wierd but the regular meals are pretty good. The BBQ place just north of Carl's junior is good. Yamatani is good if you like sushi. Schats bakery is an overpriced tourist trap that isn't that good anyway, and now that family owns whiskey creek and opened Schats roadhouse which is also way overpriced for what you get. The only time I've been there I paid $23 for a cold burger, soggy fries and one IPA. As far as Mexican goes, there is a taco truck on the corner of Barlow and 395 that I'm told is stellar. If your in independence and the taco truck is open, eat there. It's excellent.

For off-roading, your going to have to head south or east to avoid snow besides the table lands. Cerro Gordo may be accessible, saline valley, Death Valley and panamint valley, fish lake valley or just dirt roads around here.

For other attractions Manzanar is great, the museum in Independence (I don't know the name, just google it), mt Whitney fish hatchery is getting better and better. Lone pine film museum is pretty good from what I've heard. Laws railroad museum is cool and good for burning a half day.

You can pm me if you have any other questions and I'll give you my phone number.

That's my bridge on Route 6 Bitches !!!

Hey !! You don't need to look for shit there. Pull over, take a left or a right off Rte 6. Turn everything off. Get comfortable and sit for an hour or three. Wait for the sky the wind and the sunset.

I can't make it through bishop without stopping at Schatts bakery and throwing at least $100 down on slab jerky at Mahogony Smoked Meats.

we did several of the local restaurants-- BBQ, chinese and pizza. And the brewery. good stuff. Roamed around north of town on the Volcanic Tablelands, Chigado Canyon, petroglyphs, etc. Even got to pet a mule!

Anyone know how the drive in from Tahoe or Bakersfield is now? I've got to make a trip soon and not sure if I want to include it on a trip to/from Bakersfield.

When I go in check Weather and web cams courtesy of Medford Fuel / Pacific Pride
If the Webcam in Lee Vining doesn't show snow you're good.
If you get lucky you might catch the desert during the 2 weeks a year when the flowers bloom, the poppys around Tehachapi are a sight to see.

Is there a decent steak in Bushop? I normally stay in Mammoth Lakes when I'm in that area.

Last time I stopped in Bishop I got a decent steak at Whiskey Creek.

Sage restaurant on west line street just west of the post office. I've never eaten there, but the reviews are stellar from my friends.

Get a sandwich next time. They are excellent. Now that Albert passed away in bridgeport, I'd say they are the best in the eastern sierra.

Looks clear in Lee Vining. The flowers are in bloom NOW.

Do it.

Looking at the weather forecast, it'll probably be early next week if I go.

The ride up the Tahacipis should be awesome. Take a side trip to death valley.

If you weren't headed to Bakersfield I'd hitch a ride.

Looks like Bakersfield is going to be it's own trip because I've got to stop at Reedley, Hanford and McKittrick on that trip. I'll make Bishop it's own trip.
