iPhone will be policing you .

iPhone will soon have a 'Do not Disturb While Driving' mode which will activate automatically when you get behind the wheel to help prevent accidents

When you're driving, it's all too easy to become distracted by a notification popping up on your smartphone.

But that distraction could soon be a thing of the past with Apple's latest iOS update.

The firm announced yesterday at its WWDC conference that it is launching a 'Do Not Disturb While Driving' feature that will automatically prevent notifications from popping up when it senses that you are in the car.

The feature will be rolled out worldwide as part of Apple's iOS 11 update this autumn.

The announcement of the feature comes just six months after Apple was sued for not including one like it.

The case involved a fatal car accident that was caused by a driver who was using FaceTime at the time of the crash.

Do Not Disturb While Driving can detect when your phone is connected to a car using Bluetooth or a cable, or if the car is moving, and withhold any notifications that could distract you.

This includes text messages, WhatsApp messages and news updates.

The iPhone screen will also lock to prevent drivers from accessing their apps while driving.

The feature is optional for passengers in the car, who can choose to disable it if they would like.

Apps that will still be available include Apple Maps and Google Maps, although users won't be able to input destinations once the car is in motion.

In a blog announcing the update, a spokesperson for Apple said: 'iOS 11 introduces a new way to help drivers stay more focused on the road with Do Not Disturb while driving.

'iPhone can detect when you may be driving and automatically silence notifications to keep the screen dark.

'Users have the option of sending an auto reply to contacts listed in Favourites to let them know they are driving and cannot respond until they arrive at their destination.'

Research published in the British Medical Journal has shown that drivers are four times more likely to be in a crash if they use their phone, and that reaction times are three times slower if you text and drive than if you drink drive.

Despite this, statistics show that 60 per cent of car crashes in the UK last year were caused by someone texting and driving, while this figure was 25 per cent in the US.

The Do Not Disturb feature was not the only change in Apple's next operating system update that could help drivers.

Apple has also added lane guidance and speed limits within the Apple Maps app.

I'm assuming you can turn it on and off, like most iOS settings and features.

If I had a teenager, you bet that would be running on their phone.

So by default, the driver can disable theirs as well.

Android has had a similar feature at least 5 years, but for some reason the fanbois think this should be news.

Ummm, I think the point is, Apple got "pushed" to develop the feature after some idiot Facetimed while driving.

Coming up next: Alcohol/Drug sensors embedded in your phone.

It won't. But i'm all for it anyway. I've watched several accidents in the last 4 months where someone was rear ended at a light hard with the other driver staring at their phone. It's probably going to be a fluff piece that everyone learns to turn off, but it's better than nothing.

People on the phone and driving is the most dangerous thing on the roads today. I'm all for self driving cars for the masses, they can't possibly be worse than what we have now!

It's not necessarily a bad idea but it still doesn't address the fact that it's needed because we as a society lack the responsibility to focus on driving and not play with our fidget spinner, I mean iPhone.

Even before smartphones we still had a major problem with guys shaving, women putting makeup on, parents entertaining their kids, people reading a book or newspaper, playing with a GPS, etc.

The issues will still happen until we can actually punish the drivers who aren't paying attention. We are abdicating responsibility by letting the government regulate our lives when we try and blame a phone manufacturer because a person made a bad choice. It's no different than being able to sue a gun manufacturer if a person commits a crime with a gun. I can't wait till we can sue car companies when we get in to a crash. Man up people and own your stupid or don't bitch when shit like this happens.

What going to do to stop people from telling their phone they are a passenger? I have a phone holder that sits on a heater vent. I touch my phone to answer it and I never have to touch it again. It even meets Washington's new no hands law requirements. Anything more than a simple touch of your phone constitutes breaking the law.

One of the biggest advantages apple has over google is their marketing department and users who only follow apple news.

They are both great operating systems, but how many times has apple out marketed a feature that android had for years? Like google wallet, launched in 2011 and apple pay launched as "ground breaking" in 2014? It's all about marketing.

Most states have anti-texting while driving laws. Agree on the misplaced blame towards the phone mfgs.

Further proof marketing adds value.

When companies merge or get bought, there's usually a valuation placed on each part of the business, as the bean counters justify the price paid. One of those "assets" is called "goodwill" (AKA a slush fund for folks who paid too much, but that's another matter. ). Goodwill represents the value of the brand. The last major campaign I did was worth 10 million.

Company sold for just under a billion.

Because OMG, it's like so hard and stuff to not look at your phone while driving because, like, OMG I am so important that if I don't respond to a tweet or text immediately, like my friends will all think I'm avoiding them and like drama and stuff. Like OMG.

Fucking cars themselves are getting just as bad with their touchscreen gadgets that keep people from paying attention to the effing road. You mean I can play Candy Crush on my nav screen while driving?!!!11!??// Squee!!!

Read the article. You have the ability to turn it off.

WOW! Iphone is going to what Android has been doing.

If I text my wife, and she is driving, I get a "I driving and cannot text" message.

Toyota built that into the HUD, leastwise it's in my 2106 4runner. You can call and answer but no txt/no answering emails.

Have to make sure people are not drunk dialing or drunk texting.

Again it has been part of Android for at least 3 versions now. So around 2010-2011 or so.

what, apple is behind android 5 years for a feature?

no. fucking. way.

and it's not Apple policing you,. it's a feature you can choose to use or not, in an attempt to keep dumbasses from getting tickets, and to shield them from liability.
it's not like apple is going to narc you out to the local popo that you're texting and driving so they can come issue you a ticket.
clickbait title is clickbait.

People are going to keep pushing the distracted driving thing to the breaking point and make the dot GOV step in and over-protect everyone.

My wife and mom(both apple folks) have been jealous of my motorola doing the auto reply while I'm driving thing for years. As soon as my blue tooth connects it asks if I am driving or a passenger, and either does nothing if the latter, or sets up auto text reply if the former. It's convenient. I never fucked with my phone while I was driving anyways, but it is a cool feature and works seamlessly. And it didn't cost me $800 hahahahahahahahaha.

You mean like when they force self-driving cars on everyone and make insurance, registration etc for owning a personal vehicle too expensive for most to afford.

I'm also curious to see how they make up the money they're going to lose from speeding tickets, DUIs etc.
