Unless you're going to distinguish between a tool used to inflict harm on a human vs harm on an animal in the sense of hunting, but I'm not sure that's all that useful a distinction.

Taking someone to task on the daily use of these terms is super cunty.
My personal target rifles were not designed to be weapons, nor will they ever be used as weapons.

My son refers to them by the make and model. I use firearm in the classes so I try to do the same outside of there too.

So yeah, tool.
in Tennessee, deep country Tennessee where you have to drive up onto a ridge to make a call.

Drive up to ridge to tell buddy that the key he gave me for the gate at the cabin does't work.

@moggie asks if I have tools, I say no, not a wheeling trip. This is the exact conversation.
"You got a pistol right?"
"yes"
"Shoot that fucker"
"Dude it's like midnight in a state forest"
"So?"

Drives me nuts.
any auto-loading gun is an automatic, hence the use of the word "automatic". there is no manual manipulation to extract the spent shell and/or reload a new round.

a fully automatic means holding the trigger down once

a semi-automatic means one trigger pull per shot

people get too caught up in labels and semantics and miss common sense.

I had this discussion with an attorney while doing a trust, He said "you need to refer to those as firearms", so they are firearms.

US gov't uses firearm and weapon together in this example

Firearms Law and Legal Definition

Under 26 USCA § 861 (a), firearms is defined as “"a shot gun or rifle having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length, or any other weapon, except a pistol or revolver, from which a shot is discharged by an explosive if such weapon is capable of being concealed on the person, or a machine gun, and includes a muffler or silencer for any firearm whether or not such firearm is included within the foregoing definition." United States v. Adams, 11 F. Supp. 216, 217 (S.D. Fla. 1935)

saying, "Well, this is the .44 Magnum Semi-Auto-Mag and it holds a 300-grain cartridge. And, if properly used, it can remove the fingerprints." sounds stupid

OP, your neighbour is correct, it is a weapon...

A weapon, arm, or armament is any device used with intent to inflict damage or harm to living beings, structures, or systems. Weapons are used to increase the efficacy and efficiency of activities such as hunting, crime, law enforcement, self-defense, and warfare. In a broader context, weapons may be construed to include anything used to gain a strategic, material or mental advantage over an adversary.
