Why are all forums seem to be dwindling?

It seems over the past year or two, the number of postings on forums are decreasing. What's the deal? Where is everyone going? I am not a facebook guy - are there pages on sites like that causing this? Or am I just crazy?

Maybe it's because of bad grammar, I just noticed that I bungled-up the title.....

I think FB is taking over unfortunately. I hate it to. People like simplicity. Problem lies is that with forums such as PBB, as long as the host doesn't go down or a major issue then the data will be available for a long time. Try searching for something specific on a FB group, damn near impossible.

I would agree with @RangerRock, on Facebook and other sites (Reddit for example) taking over.
IMO, being able to upload pictures without spending money or opening a different app is probbaly part of it...

This has been discussed recently quite a bit. I think forums it's a bitch to post pictures, social media makes it easy to get nutswingers to like your junk even if its hack. The password reset and the Photobucket fiasco were the nail in the coffin here. Some of the forums will die because of Photobucket. Once a guy searches a few threads and the pictures are all dead they won't come back. And when you have company like here that don't care they will die.

I won't use the book of faces but iam on Instagram. Tech is nonexistent and when you ask a question very few guys respond.

The internet was supposed to make us smarter but it seems like people are getting dumber every minute. An example is that some people can't even post things in the correct forum.

Because you know... forums dwindling is a Tow Rigs and Trailers issue.

My 2 cents, having been down this wormhole a time or two, is that pirate exploded when rock crawling, desert racing, and rock bouncing was gaining massive mainstream popularity. Over the past 30 years, I've seen automotive trends boom and ebb. I was heavy into car audio, then watched that fade as fast and furious came out. Was into the import scene and now that's got all the nails in the coffin. Muscle cars, rock crawling jeeps, now it seems like diesel bro dozers... There were Volkswagens and Subarus with mud flaps, Thule racks, and some with sanded hoods somewhere in there. Not really sure what the it thing is right now? Just seems like the fan boys have moved on and it's back to a more core group of enthusiasts.
Anyone remember mini trucks?
Hell, my dad had a bitching van with a mural, porthole windows, shag carpet, and mag wheels.

And those dudes are still out there. Lol. They probably have their own forums. I was into 3 wheelers for a while and those guys still have forums.

No doubt Facebook has taken a massive toll on all online forums. It's just so much easier, and the benefit of built in photo hosting cannot be overstated. I had my whole life on photobucket and I haven't posted a single picture on pirate since the take down. Almost ten years of posts were disabled, gone, in an instant. Would take a long time to host somewhere else and redo the threads, time I don't have.

Tech is still much better here, I like the relative anonymity for whatever reason, and of course anyone can search for years worth of knowledge. But the internet forum's time is probably numbered, just like the online chat room is pretty well dead. I imagine before too long, social media will catch on to the fact that these forums are heavily sponsored and will foster a group option to preserve threads and allow companies to promote their brands. Eventually just as MySpace is gone, Facebook will be replaced by something new, and the cycle will go on.

But, yeah, I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Really open my browser a lot more sparingly than I used to. Almost everything I use has an app now that is more seamless and intuitive.

Oh, one more thing. The polaris rzr has probably played as much of a role in diminishing the 4wd truck scene as anything. A accessible, insurable, easy to own and finance, reliable, and capable beyond most people's dreams. Hell even I gave in an bought one. Everywhere I go I see rzr parks and rzr riding but most stuff is closed to full size trucks and few people seem to have space to store and work on one, or the desire for a project to start with.

A lack of active moderation isn't helping this place. This thread should be in GCC.

Venominjected - you answered my question perfectly. Now I remember why people grew tired of forums. People just like you.

Listen retard.

This place is pretty simple to figure out. Read the subforum title and ask "Is my question/topic related to this?" and if not, find the one that it is.

The fact this place is organized is what makes it NOT like Fagbook. I could reasonably expect to come into here and find nothing but topics on tow rigs, trailers, RVs, buses, and medium/heavy duty vehicles. On Fagbook it would be normal to find somebody selling a used dildo collection, or bitching about an incoming tropical storm, right in the middle of a specific group and that would be totally acceptable there.

The other thing is here I can tell you to get fucked and reasonably expect moderators to either be indifferent, or to be on my side. This is a good thing as it allows the group to self moderate the content by running off the little bitches that were just going to post off topic fluff to make themselves feel better anyways. It also allow for bad tech to be outed as such immediately; you can post the most retarded shit on Facebook and you'll probably just get a bunch of likes and retards agreeing with you. The idea is that doesn't happen here, and for that to not happen the kid gloves must be put away.

In summary, post in the right fucking place or get the fuck out.

Toodles.

reported anyways.

hell damn near every subforum has this same thread

i know that for the last 10 years it shows up in the toyota forum every 6 months or so.

hopefully everybody who cares about the number of likes and hastags they get will finally leave and it can be just a small curmudgeon group of tech junkies and wheelers left behind

The main advantage of a forum is that it keeps things organized. If you're not even going to utilize that then what's the point?

Alright, I admit I posted this in the wrong spot. That being said, the Tow Rigs forum is my home base on Pirate so I just posted the question here as it's the forum that I live in. I didn't know this was an active/played-out topic on a lot of boards.

The question was pretty general, but I should have asked in the context of Tow Rigs. There aren't many places on the net for truck/trailers - I just wanted to know where everyone was going (if they where).

If the reason for the demise of forums is really the epidemic of subjects posted in the wrong place, then I apologize for contributing to the problem. I really do love this forum, and hope it is around in a decade from now.

considering you've only been on here for a year, then yeah it will be IF you continue to post and use it.

instead of lamenting the death, contribute to the growth. even if it is something that has already been done or new tech brought over from another format

not letting people post in all areas is a real killer here pissed me off bad the other day when I was looking for some info from people here could not post so had to go elsewhere...

but Yes I run forums too and things are dead other social media yes facebook is were everyone is going to I wont as its to government propaganda involved with gathering info on you and loved ones...

Forums do rule when it comes to finding info on subjects someone is always ready to give you info or advice I have had forums since dial up BBS forums were around I wont give up on them even if no one ever shows up it keeps me in the know on how to run servers and the software that runs on em as well as the web services one can offer on them like forums blogs and html php css and so on...

I don't like sites that block stuff or if they are to socialist oriented the world is not a perfect place so nether should a forum. I like this place its not politically correct all the time that's why I like it here people are real try and get that with facebook lol....

its allot to do with how well the school system and TV have made sheople out of the population... its painful not being able to bitch slap people a dozen times a day but I don't really want to be in an 8x8 room with bubba ether...

This is happening in all forums I frequent. Participation peaked in the mid 2000s and has been dropping since.

Automotive forums also have the problem of an aging membership. Newer generations just aren't as deeply into cars/trucks, much less older stuff they can't relate to.

Facebook has definitely accelerated the trend, but things here were going downhill before that. One issue is dilution. This used to be the place to come for serious information and it policed itself. Then the “kinder gentler” Pirate came along and the site grew and grew and grew with the “me too” crowd. Then it got sold to the syrup nazis and a lot of people no longer felt a tie to it. Many of the hard core people drifted off, tired of dealing with the daycare crowd.

Photofawkit is likely the final straw as so much of the old tech is now lost. I was saying a decade ago that paying for membership for photo hosting was driving people to use other services - which were lost when they didn’t maintain them.

Nail on the head.

The lack of search-ability is a side effect of the social media trend that most folks aren't considering... they'll pay for it eventually though.
