I'm around Prius's a lot, I hate to say it but they win. My customer has 12 of them, running two shifts a day and 4000 miles per week.

Their average 2016 has 180,000 miles and they are very solid reliable cars, they rinse and repeat at 450-500k miles.

That is too many miles and hours of your life to be in some pos base civic, versa etc.

For ride/economy/features, I would go with an optima or sonata.

It's likely safe to say that most wouldn't know which end of a screwdriver to use either. That being said, I'm not that person.

Admittedly hard headed at times, but common sense doesn't elude me.

Goes back to the statement about other money pit projects that any savings can go toward.

I sell cars. All makes and models, whatever my customers want to buy. First thing I learned was to not try to talk someone into something other than what they wanted when they drove in. But in the rare instance I get asked what a good, cheap, reliable, easy to work on, cheap on maintenance, etc., car is, I generally point them to a Fusion. Not a eco boost either. Ive sold countless Fusions with the non turbo 2.5, several are reporting back high 30's in mpg.

When asked why I pick that car, there are several reasons.
1- is they can be bought cheap, for your $10k budget, expect around 2013 with 30-40k miles.
2-for a mid size, the seats are comfy and there is good leg room(for reference Im 6'1 230#)
3-maintenance is cheap and easy(compared to the toy's and lexus mentioned)
4-parts are cheap.(see below for engine pull out cost)
5-non-turbo, Ive replaced too many turbos on these and the escapes. IMO they're junk.
6-good mpg, expect high 30's real world driving.
7-good handling and brakes, again for a midsize.
8-I have a couple customers who mile them out, easy to see 200k+ with oil changes.

this is a copy/past from car-part.com for an engine for one of these 2.5 fusions. cheap cheap cheap.

2015 Engine Assembly Ford Fusion 2.5L 4,652miles A 00150238 $400

You won't buy anything for a lexus for $400 bucks.

I have a 2012 focus titanium (trim level matters seats are better) I drive it like I stole it it gets about 31 mpg avg summer higher than winter. Cheap maintenance, closing in on 100k brakes were done at 60k, new clutch at 80k it was warranty had a little slippage but wanted the repair done be for 100k .

I've read it'll get high 40's on the highway. A lot better than my 2001 Grand Cherokee that gets 18mpg.
Depending on speed, high 50's are reasonable. my 98 jetta gets 58mpg at 60mph and it's got 360k on it. The electrical system is a steaming pile.

That would be amazing, but 60mph would get me killed in Michigan. On the highways I take to work the speed limit is 70mph, which means 80-85mph is the standard speed.

I'm in michigan, there's no michigan speed limit above 55 within 200 miles.

I've had my '98 going 80 on I35 but the engine is screaming. I'd swap OD gears in it if I were going that fast often. IMHO the stock OD gears are a little short, it's easy to swap in taller ones.

I too was in this issue.. 2013 GMC Sierra Z92 ..6in lift and 35s.. 65 miles each way... 20mpg @55-60mph...still cost me $680/m in gas plus $500/m truck payment.

Traded inn handed man card in and ought a 2014 Prius in 2014. Bought extended warranty. 125k miles or 4 years. Well 97k miles later just oil change and tires/rotate. No issues with car. Yeah i hate it as its not my truck but.. 90% highway. If i drive 80-85mph i get 45-49mpg. 55-60mph I get 55-71mpg. Winter is always worse and some people dont know... in a hybrid.. FILL YOUR DAMN TIRES!!!

After oil change dealer puts me back to 32psi and i cant better 50mpg. Once i go back to 43psi [tire max 44] i go back to closer to 60mpg and up.

Considering I do not check out dudes in cars, nor envy other people's possessions/base their self worth off of them, I would say no.

And you obviously do not read jalopnik.

There is absolutely no reason to own a gas powered or auto trans VW. The electrical gremlins are only worth dealing with when you're getting 55+mpg

I just have a hard time believing guys can convince themselves that driving one of those because "it handles like a go-kart" isn't really a cry to just come outta the closet!

Sounds like Jalopnik is one safe place for guys who love them some miatas?
