New roof and algae/moss killer

Had a certainteed landmark TL roof put on my place last fall, on the north side which never gets sun, is beginning to get faint yellow algae growing in the downspout runoff areas. Before I get sold on some expensive stuff, I’ve read online that normal weed killer works fine and won’t hurt/stain shingles, and that bleach ruins them. Damn roof cost me $20k, I’d like to keep it mint as long as possible anbody have experience?

Zinc strips.

I live the PNW where moss is common. I bought a roll of zinc flashing about 4 inches in width and put it under the roof peak shingles leaving about 2 inches sticking out from under the shingles.

Don't worry about moss or algae on the roof anymore.

Bleach-Free, No Scrub Mold & Mildew, Moss & Algae Cleaner | Wet & Forget

It's a homeowner grade product but it works, hit the roof with it every year or two and you'll be golden

This stuff rules! I've been using it on my roof, sidewalks and driveway for the past 6 years and it works great. Costco sells it seasonally around here, at a good price.

Clean off what you can first to speed up the process. It does take some time to see results, so don't expect a huge change overnight. Spray on cloudy day with a pump sprayer. I do it twice a year. Once you keep on schedule, you will never have to deal with moss on the roof, or moldy sidewalks....

My roof color is heather blend, so those would stick out like a sore thumb, which would drive me insane and I heard that zinc ruins aluminum gutters?

I'm sorry to hear that. I bet they got vinyl siding too (West Coast snob voice).

With our Urban Wildlife Interface Codes, gutters out her can cost $15-20K.

Frankly, I leave that to the owner. Most elect to spend their $$ on good site drainage, rather than gutters.

Did I mention I hate gutters?

My house is 140years old, and has old growth redwood siding.

I use baking soda. Buy a big box at Costco and wait until the hard rains have passed. Then before the dry season I get up and sprinkle it around like the overpriced moss control cans. Let it sit until the moss turns brown then sweep or hose it off.

If you don’t get enough rain after spreading it around you can mist it with the hose a few nights in a row.

Holy shit Batman. That is outrageous, what are the codes and what does it really matter if someone wants gutters

So why the fuck didn't mine work? I call BS on that zinc strip nonsense. Zinc strips just buckled under my shingles and made me nervous. Moss laughed and rooted in.

"Moss Be Gone" did it for me.

Dunno. Mine work great. I can even take pictures where I don't have them on my roof and you can see moss growing. I need to get up there and put them around the rest of the roof.

I think my roofer jacked me. Is it just standard galvanized flashing? Cuz that's what it looks like. ... the shit expands with sun/heat and buckles lifting the shingles. I removed the front because it looked like trouble. The back don't get the sun so I left it. Moss grows regardless so I use the powder.

This is what I used. Z-Stop zinc strips roof moss / algae prevention zinc strip for roofing materials and shingles Got a roll at Lowes for like $30.

I did it myself just a strip of them nailed down under the peak shingles.

The trial run I put them down at the very peak of the roof and planned on putting them down every 4/6/8 feet or so, but it worked so well I didn't have to do that.

Not sure you are talking about the zink strips, shouldn't be any buckling with them.

I applied Wet and Faggot about 6 mths ago.

Nothing impressive has occurred yet. Lichen be liken it.

How long did it take to notice a massive difference with you other guys?

I look at the before and after pics the marketing stuff shows, and I think it's a load of shit. Orrr, am I being impatient?

Another vote for this stuff. I used it on the walkways, the roof, some spots in the back of the shop..stuff works fantastic. best thing is costco gets 2 pack big gallon containers of it for cheap.
