I especially love the people who defend their "right" to do it.
Ultimately, we are going to be told we are too dumb to drive our own cars. All of us will suffer at the utter stupidity of a few. We may not have a right, but it is the death knell of one of America's biggest freedoms. I couldn't wait to get my license at 16 and gtfo of the house on a Friday night and go cruise with my friends. I love sports cars and the driving experience. Kids these days just want to play on their phones, and it's a major driving force for autonomous bullshit.

I got to ride in a friend's Model 3 a couple months ago. Cool car, and he loves the idea of self driving cars and electrics, but even he's not on board with mandated automated driving. I told him it's coming though. Just wait.

The funniest thing about the Tesla, is that it's instrument panel is basically a huge tablet. It looked distracting as fuck to me, especially since it's centered in the dash.

I have never had the issue. I just don't want to be penalized because someone else can't hack it when simply talking, and don't think hands free should have restrictions at all.

I have shut off my phone before if I'm in a bad mood or just feel like I'm not 100%. In those situations, I don't even have the radio on. Ultimately though, It's a green button if I want to answer it and it takes no more time to see who it is and decide to answer than checking my speedometer or oil pressure gauge. Road conditions, weather and otherwise are a major factor too. I completely ignore if traffic is hectic or I'm just agitated. 2 lane in the country, that is straight for miles?Sure, I'll answer 9 out of 10. In town if I take one, and things get busy, I just tune the conversation out. Just like music. Or hell, the passenger in the seat next to you talking. Most of us spend at least some time talking to a spouse, buddy, kids, etc.

Nobody would ever ban radio communications in aircraft... so I don't really see a good argument for banning hands free radio (cell, HAM, or CB) in a car. Or cruise control. Or the volume dial.

I think texting and driving awareness would already be as rabid as the MADD campaign, except all the MADD moms are texting and driving themselves. I'm amazed how many here want to take hands free even further when it's obvious typing while driving is the biggest offender.

It's also pretty funny (if it's safe and there's no traffic oncoming) to just let your vehicle move 1 foot closer on the line when some dipshit is glued to their phone. 9 times out of 10 they lurch 3 feet forward and slam on the brakes. Pay attention check, bitch.

It would be a great graph if vehicle safety design during that time period had remained static.

My sister and her dog was mowed down 2/3rds of the way across a marked crosswalk at a 4 way stop intersection by some idiot fixated on his phone(Driver admitted it and was actually cited for it). Didn't even realize he'd gone through an intersection till she bounced off the hood.

Until they start to enforce the laws already on the book and the penalties start to hurt nothings going to change as people will always think they are special and can do multiple things at once when in reality they cant.

Yea same here. Take a look around while sitting at a red light and everyone is on there phone , soon as light turns green if they even notice the light change you get the head up and down really quick as it's a race to finish the text before they can get up to speed.

When I was younger I had a friend who did that crap non-stop while driving it wasn't anything ever important just Facebook and emails. I just quit driving with him and yep he eventually rear ended someone.

Even at work we had a no cell phone policy but really wasn't informed until recently someone in a company vehicle with a inward facing camera was on their phone along with all the passengers texting so now no one anywhere can even have a phone on them at any time

'Tis how they avoid the direct civil litigation...
That throws it in the arena of eye witnesses and LEO testimony should it go to court.

80-20 rule my friend... 80% of the debacles are cause by 20% of the causative agents. After the causitive agent is identified all it takes is a group of irate citizens and a sympathetic .gov representative ear. Thats how MADD got the FED DUI stuff on the books...

For those unfamiliar with the Pareto rule...

And not just young folks, I see folks probably in their 60s-70s constantly looking at their phones too.

So... in a modern society, what's the solution for this? I don't have a clue, but I'd love to hear.

I'm contemplating getting a motorcycle because I've wanted one for a while, and my carpool friend motorcycles every so often, so it would be fun to ride along with him. But FUCK the clueless people on the road make me question if riding a motorcycle would be any fun, because I'd just be dodging idiots for 45 miles.

So just a reminder, keep those tow hitches mounted, and at radiator height.

The solution is auto braking assist technology. Sad but true.

USA license: 12 (+drivers ed, depending on age) USD
German license: 1200 - 2000 USD (always)

I leave for work around 5:45am, and fall/winter/spring when it's still dark i see glowing screens in over half the vehicles on the road. Some of these camp in the left lane doing 3mph under the speed limit... others i will pass 6 times on my 25 mile commute because ive got the cruise set and they constantly speed up/slow down... and at least once a week someone will ride my ass in the right lane using my vehicle as a marker. If it's still dark their face will glow a dull blue.

I dont even like commuting on my bike anymore.

Laws. Pass more laws that cannot be enforced. And then once everybody realizes those laws cannot be enforced pass more laws that require the driver's phone to disable itself when driving. QED.

Had to lay on the horn for a woman in front of me this morning. When the light turned green she started driving (eventually) with her cell in her right hand while steering and texting with her thumb.

She was waggling all over the road slowly in the left lane with a large truck to her right and line of traffic behind her. A danger to herself and others.

I do not get it. Maybe I don't have enough friends that need to be instantly texted back with something. Kinda glad for that actually.

Yep,someone commented earlier about "they drive slower and more carefully when they are texting". Yeah,we know because we F'ing sit behind you and watch you swerve back and forth.

Somehow the left lane has become the texting lane instead of the passing lane.

but it's perfectly fine for the police to text/call/use a fucking computer while cruising down the road at 20 mph over the speed limit.....

exactly. about that time is also when all of the drivers aids came about to keep people from fucking hitting things.

personally I can't wait until we're at a point when even $500 shitbox cars have handsfree. I put my phone in the center console and don't look at it. If someone calls I push a button on the steering wheel and I speak to them.

See it all the time here too. I donít get why car manufacturers these days will have the dash lights on and not just have automatic head and tail lights.

Negatory ghostrider. I don't text often and when I do you'll never be able to tell. I drive on 2 lane roads mostly and when at traffic lights I'm sitting there ready to go yelling GREEN MEANS GO when dumbasses Cant look up. If someone texts me twice in a row I call or tell them to call.
I don't GAF if you believe me or not because were all full of shit motherfuckers occasionally.
Ive been driving over mountain passes drinking coffee and shaving with my cordless razor on summer mornings for years, that and talking on the phone are not that hard. I put my phone on speakerphone most of the time anyway. I used to be a Baker and I could carry on a conversation while rolling out dough and making breads and cakes . I don't chew gum though because it annoys me.

Drinking coffee and shaving do not require your eyes.I don't have a problem with someone talking on a phone. I would say that's about the same as talking to someone in your car. It's the scrolling down the list of contacts or dialing that takes your attention. Because the phone is down, you don't have proriffirole vision. Even checking caller ID is a distraction. Of course texting is diverting your attention big time. Speakerphone is alright as long as you arnt fumbling around trying to find the switch to turn it on.

Oh look.... the socialist German is here telling Americans how to run our own shit again and how great they have it. It's no surprise that your solution is basically more taxes and government mandated bullshit.

And seriously, education is your reasoning for why people text and drive?

Your country has a huge issue with morons glued to their phones just like everywhere else. It doesn't matter if they are professors, kids, or construction workers. People of all ages and levels of education are hopelessly addicted to screens.

You can stop using your limited experiences in the US to paint a picture of the rest of it any time. Bay area hardly represents it all. You get flashed and honked at for driving with no lights here too.
