It's not cellophane. Look at the sign in the background. It's a plant based wrapping.

Yup! Cellophane is wood based/plant based.

But it's still crackly and goes in the garbage. Not recyclable.

Not cellophane by "traditional" standards then.... The "new" stuff is quickly biodegradable, according to the article I read. Their argument being that it's pointless to package fresh foods in something that will vastly outlast the food it is protecting...on the consumer/distributor interface, anyway. Or something like that....

There's been biodegrable "plastics" for a while. They just cost more and don't perform as well.

Going back to paper wrapping would have been an option too, but oh no, can't do that.

It's been the push for a long time, it just hasn't hit grocery stores yet.

Basically, wood is entirely renewable. Cut the tree down to make 2x4s and bags, plant a new one, and it's like it never happened.

The grocery stores went away from paper to SAVE MONEY and pushed it as being a 'green' thing to be 'saving trees.'

Now that said, certain countries don't have very renewable forestry practices, but most do. Don't source your paper from the wrong places and it'll be fine.

Likewise, all the hipsters justify having a wood stove in their poorly constructed 'tiny house' on the basis that wood is carbon neutral. Which I'll admit it actually is, if again it's sourced from somewhere with sustainable forest practices.

The mills here run cogens plants and sell the power as being carbon neutral/green. People pay a premium for it.

Should be able to source all the paper products we could ever use in country. We have so much scrub and filler product laying around it isn't funny.

I think we are headed that way. Gotta do something with all those beetle kill drought stricken trees we need to cut down to keep our forests healthy!

All the stores down here are back on paper bags. Some charge for them but most give you as many as you want. There was a law that they were supposed to charge for single use bags.

Yep. Paper bags only up here in Monterey county. I think the local grocery store charges .10 a bag if you don't bring your own. Half the time I forget to bring my own.

They also outlawed businesses from using styrofoam containers. People can bitch and moan all they want, but so far I've noticed a few things:

The cardboard to-go containers for food work just fine.

The cloth grocery bags I bring to the store can hold more and I don't have to worry about the handle breaking when I try to break the world record for most bags carried from the car in a single trip.

So much this ^! Renewable resources FTMFW

Embrace the noble trees . . . with a chainsaw in each hand .

Conserve crude oil . . . for gasoline and diesel production.

Priorities are important

The Whole Foods stores out here only use paper bags. Been that way for a while now.
