What are you paying for propane

With a hurricane barreling down on us and the tank that feeds my generator is running on fumes, I just got quoted $3.26/gal. Seems high but I have no clue how propane fluctuates relative to other petroleum prices.

The whole leased tank thing is a fucking racket. You lease their tank and then you're stuck paying whatever they want to charge you to fill it. I have a feeling I'm getting screwed.

A fair quote is more in the $2 range right now. Just for kicks I called around once to about every place within 50 miles with a website and the prices varied all over the place. They simply charge what they want to.

Call this place:

https://www.lgjordanoil.com/

They are in Apex. If I recall, you're in Greensboro. But they will get you close to the going rate. It's worth the drive for me to go there.

Also I've noticed (but not every time) that the closer they are to the main pipe flowing into the state, the better the price. The local pipeline to RDU is Apex. I'd have to guess that the local to G-boro is those large storage tanks along I-40? And probably the storage for all of NC?

Just filled up the tank before rates go up for harvest drying. Got in at $1.05/gallon with a 5 cent per gallon rebate if I paid cash. I will fill it again in February and is typically around the $1.75/gallon.

My last fill up was $1.79gallon summer rate. In the winter I’ve seen it $3/gallon fairly recently.

It doesn’t go bad, you should fill it in the summer and save some cash. You’re gonna get stuck with the hurricane excise tax now

The PO left the leased tank with the house and didn't leave any details on who owned it or anything else. I could have really screwed her over but instead I was nice enough to track down the propane company and agreed to the lease. The woman at the time assured me they wouldn't charge the $140 tank rental fee for not making the minimum purchase yet this is the second year in a row that they have. Last year the waived it and then just jacked up the rate to make up for it.

I'm waiting to hear back to see if they'll sell me the tank. If not, they can get it right the fuck out of here.

Southern States just quoted me $1.89/gal for a new customer rate and $2.58 for current customers and $80 annual tank rent because I know I won't meet their minimum.

Waiting for pricing from a couple other places, but I think Southern States is probably going to be the best option...I at least trust them a little.

I've always heard late summer/early fall is the best time. It's summer now and those are the rates I'm getting....

Get rid of the tank and buy your own. A propane tank lease is always a bad idea unless it's dirty cheap and they don't have their name painted on the side. The last time I was renting in a house that had propane, the tank was definitely leased but they didn't have their name on it or an identifiable color so we'd just get it filled by whoever was cheapest. Paint it like a holstein, and if anyone asks if you lease or own just say "own" without hesitation and you'll be fine.

They're incredibly strict about tank ownership here. You have to supply proof of ownership to get a non-leased tank filled. I tried when I first bought the place before I figured out who it was originally leased from.

That's more than I pay for heating oil. my friend paid 1.87 a gallon for 400 gallons delivered plus delivery since it was 11:30 at night

Cost at the rack near SF is 1.01 ish right now.

A dollar margin is a good average markup without getting ripped, or any buddy deals.

Cheapest between 4th of July and Labor Day.

Buy a tank, then shop.

Not a bad price. Our tank lease is only good for the time we own the house...

We dont use propane except for a gas fireplace in the LR and for the stove top, cheaper to use electricity at $.05-.06/kWhr (res price). Downside is MVP wiring can be iffy...power outages from snow.
