Very nice of the guy and glad to hear about the kids getting this, but, and don't take this the wrong way I'm just being curious here and thinking out loud, but...what about the students and teachers that didn't lose their house, or the ones that even live out of town and weren't affected at all? Should they give up their check to someone that actually suffered losses?

Imagine if you're a 50 year old teacher with good pay that drives your Lexus into town to teach and goes home to your mansion in Chico at the end of the day, what about her? Keep the $1,000 or?

Personally, if my house was good I would pass the money onto another kid that actually lost their house. Anyway. Thank you, Mr Wilson. Very nice gesture.

That's not even a question. You keep the 1k. Anyone who's pushing 3yr in teaching is a "milk the system" type of person and would have no qualms about taking anything offered to them.

How many of those are there in Paradise? I know only one of my teachers was like that in high school in Chico and she came from family money.

The only way I know of to make a small fortune teaching is to start with a large one, but maybe things are different in california

I can only assume if they didn't loose thier house they wouldn't take the money. Or if they did, they would use it for school supplies.

Public records are available and I've looked up some of our kids' teachers. Making 90-100K a year with top notch benefits, unfirabled, driving BMWs, etc. All this in an area where the cost of living is pretty cheap compared to the rest of the state.

Wow- just a quick search says average salary is over $60K. That's waaaaay more than teachers in SC.

$60k barely gets you into the lower middle class in CA.

Most teachers I know are not Ballin out driving brand new bmw's. Even if they were I can pretty much guarantee its because of thier husbands salary not theirs.

I've never heard of teachers making a killing, even if they were, most deserve it. It's one of the most important jobs out there.

Well shoot. That's a tangent I hadn't considered when I saw the blurb. So, did every single faculty member / student of Paradise high school get a check or only those that lost a home, business etc? Wonder what the numbers are in the student body vs how many $1,000 checks recipients actually received. And teachers the same.

Base starting salaries for teachers in NC is $35k a year. I think the average is somewhere around $50k. Not a lot of money.

yep.

3500 a month to rent a doublewide on an acre of land up that way.

although I disagree with the deserve it part.
If you want a full time salary, don't take 3 months off during the summer.

that's my standard response to every teacher that whines about how little they get paid. Well you only work 3/4 of the year, so you should only get 3/4 the pay.

The derailment and demise of this thread in this last page is awesome, the end is certainly near. Typical Pirate bullshit by bullshitters, take a truly great altruistic gesture, a solid talk the talk, walk the walk action, a truly generous gift horse. And kick it in the mouth, over analyze it, beat it to death, tear it down, shit on it and end up with a steamy runny pile of shit. Truly a work of butterflies into buzzard pickings. Great job. Fucking people are still being sifted from the ashes or waking up an entire family in a travel trailer down in the wet fog of the valley, all they have left. Sorry for the bummer but Cheesus Fucking Christ.

Uhhhh, no. It's not that bad, unless you found a double wide on an acre in the bay area.

Before all this craziness, you could rent a nice house in Paradise for $1200. Cheaper if you want a trailer in the woods it would be less depending on the property. My step dad bought 5 acres with a double wide in upper Magalia for around $120k last year.

As far as the teacher wages, some deserve good pay, some don't. Good teachers work after they go home and on weekends. They get the summer off but so what? I work in construction and get 3-4 months off in the winter, I still make a decent wage.

I do agree that the "can't be fired" is bs, get rid of the bottom feeders and make room for young people who actually want to do thier job.

Problem for you is the guy with the money didn't care about any of that. He gave HIS money away without any strings. Good for him.

You missed the point. Not a problem for me at all, unless I got a check for $1,000 and lived in Chico in a perfect house. Then I'd give the check to someone that lost a house and it wouldn't be a problem for my conscience any more.

No matter what your going to have those people that feel entitled to something because they had a slight connection to the event. I don't think its that big of a deal because the the type of person that takes advantage of that $1,000 check will turn it into $1,500 worth of debt in no time flat. There is also a much higher chance of someone teaching in Chico and living in Paradise, then the other way around. The cost of living in Chico was already getting out of hand before the fire.

On another note suddenly common sayings like, "putting out a fire" and "Hot job" can trigger some odd reactions from coworkers.

A gal from Paradise just posted a video on FB.

One month to the day since they left, they returned to where their house used to be, and out of the ashes their cat came a running.

Do you really think teachers get 3 months off during the summer? You must think they leave on the last day of school with the kids and don't return until the first day of school for the new year. There are some teachers at the school a week into the summer. Many are back two weeks before school starts to get their classroom ready along with the mandatory training days. Do you think they are not signing up for units, classes, training during the summer months. You probably think teachers just sit around at night and on the weekends watching TV and playing candy crush and do nothing work related. If you do know a teacher that works the bare minimum and does nothing on their own time or spends none of their own money for the students, then you don't know a very good teacher.

Then you figure in the Inservice days and such that they need during the year. Those are actually days off, summer time they can work cash jobs and do other things. So basically you were right the first time.

Any recent pictures? Now that there are some people filtering back in.

Last night I went to deliver firewood to some good friends here in Pollock Pines.
They just moved into their new home a little over a month ago. Many of the trees on their property were burned during the 2014 King Fire.

The previous owners wanted to sell to get out of this area because the were so worried about another fire in the same area.....

they had just moved to Paradise and lost their hose there

I'm interested to see what comes from this. I am not jumping to any conclusions, just waiting to see what the final cause actually is.

Edit for the non clickers: PG&E has found equipment in the area of the fire that had been damaged by gun fire.

I heard that rumor quite a while ago from some pge staffers. Wouldn’t be surprised happens all the time.
Also heard that the area of origin of the fire was under full armed lockdown while the initial investigation was being conducted.
