Maybe you're right. Memories don't always tell an accurate story.

I was listening to The Smoking Tire podcast with Scotto the other day and he made the comment that everyone still on forums is old now. It's definitely something I have noticed myself. I showed up here the first time when I was in my early teens (13 or 14 if I remember correctly). I've spent more than 15 years here now. I think 2002 was when I started using forums. I was definitely one of the youngest people on most of the forums I've ever used. Now I'm 30 so I still don't know what it's really like to get old. Maybe once I reach the age that a lot of you guys are this will all make a lot more sense.

What is this Facebook ya'll speak of??? Can I cuss like a fuckin pirate there and make fun of retard posts? Can I post a political statement upon my MAGA beliefs without major backlash? How about post pics and talk about all my acquired HP Dana 60's and shit without people knowing exactly where to come steal it? Is there a tits and ass thread to follow? What about classic locker talk meme's?

If not, then I don't think I want to go there. I ditched MySpace when all my X's found me right after I got married and started buying me imaginary drinks and talking old times. Actually had no choice but to leave if I wanted to keep my marriage status. Never had intentions to show myself on social media after that.

Well, except when I got kicked off my local state 4x4 forum because I posted facts that didn't agree with what the owner had to say. Figured it was best. Was the most boring site I ever visited anyways.

But it sure seems weird that I met 90% of my current buddies on small local forums when the internet just started up. TRUE friends. The kind that helps out when you're in need. Still have a list of numbers and addresses across the state of people I can call or drop by any time if I ever got stranded. And have a drink on the way to fix my broken down shit with nothing but good times and previous get togethers back in the day to talk about.

After that, I just met a bunch of assholes that kinda grow'ed on me. Was able to go back and forth and tell it like life was with an in your face approach of reality when there was ample amounts of butt hurt involved with no safe space to go hold myself in. And I like it here.

Just wished I had welds to brag about and was as good a fabricator. But I learn something every single day here.

at some point hardcore became so hardcore, how could anybody but a master fabricator keep up or afford to compete. The shit people ran when this site started would be lambasted for being incredibly hack by today's standards, and would be labeled in the nun killer category.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I'm not done here, unless a perma-ban comes my way. This site has ruined me for all other sites, with their thin skinned, little bitch, rules and moderators who have some kinda power fetish.

My question is what would you think it would take for the site to grow? VS is the go to forum platform and a lot of the technical issues I believe relate to that, so ...

I would think you would pair down some of the sub forums so they get a little more traffic and maybe open one forum specifically for hack, nun killer builds, and possible open a nun killer class, kinda like the Gambler 500.
I think you're onto something here. I'd bet the majority of us who still have a wheeler have some hacktacular shit on some of it, if not most of it. That gets left out of build threads or not put into them at all.

I wouldn't say mine belongs there since it actually passes inspection every year, but there's a few things that could have been put there over the years with changes I've made.

I dunno, I'm just happy anybody posts anything, but I need to do my part and find more time to read and give input.

Now, tech & builds are dead and is full of people like sdcj trying to figure out which way you turn a lug nut and most people canít figure out how to post a pic. People buy red stars to enter the super secret trailer park, full of go fund meís and gain the ability to constantly Mention ďthe parkĒ, looking for attention, like itís some sort of high honor theyíve received.
Chit chat has no tits and is mainly a political battle ground and People buy the shitty fleamarket leftover Pbb gear so that they can match the local homeless population.
I don't even read the park anymore. It could disappear and I wouldn't notice. When we had a moderator in there that had some power to fuck around, it was a lot of fun. We lost that a long time ago and I wonder if it's because we all just got older and couldn't get much younger membership to replace us.

No new membership = members getting older = less money and time for projects. That's probably a big chunk of it.

Hell, I used to be on here every day and at several points this year I just go a week or several days without even thinking about it. This place used to be a high point for me, and sometimes I opt to not bother reading at all.

I don't know if I'll renew my star next year. I kinda like people having avatars, but paying $20 for one, or a shitty search function sucks. I have no idea if the blue star money is even making it to the cause either, but maybe someone can verify that.

This is pretty much the only forum I frequent these days.

Is it what it once was? No, but compared to the downfall of many other forums, Pirate is still alive.

I used to frequent FSC, had thousands of post over there, was a forum leader for a while. It went down hill and fast. last time i tried to log in, the site won't even load.

Same with EXriders.com (now ATVriders.com), and Jeepforum. Ghosttowns compared to the place, though still up and running. here, most topics still get replies in hours, not days. other forums, you have the once a week log ins to answer a few threads so it takes forever to get answers.

Even worse was the administrator sticky wherein they defined the love for this site and vowed to cup everyone's balls if we would just endorse all the new things that were on the way. Not only was it repeatedly met with fiery opposition, people got downright nasty as fuck. Every other reply after page 1 was a foul mouthed description of which of our orifices they could draw their next breath from and how "administrator" and Philip et al should crouch while we collectively urinated and shat all over them both until they couldn't recognize one another.

I thoroughly enjoyed that thread, it was actually one of my all time favorite reads here.

It used to be that if you didnt get on once or twice a day then you missed alot of shit and it would be 3-4 pages back. Now i can log on about once a week and easily keep up with the pirate shenanigans.

True. This site was a lot more active when I signed up 10 years ago. It's still doing better than some of the other forums I used to hang out on. Some of them can go days without a new post.

My wheeler is still hacktacular or would be if I spent the time to get it running again. Too busy keeping 3 on the road as DDs.

Never got into it in the first place. But then I've been here a long time and am pretty set in my ways. Its addition never caught on for me. Never felt like I was missing something.

My wife is heavily on FB and all the drama she tries to relate to me makes me glad I never got that crack addiction. Grown friends of mine have had political shouting matches on there after knowing each other around a campfire for 20 years. Not my idea of fun. I have no interest in telegraphing my life to others or living others lives voyeuristically by looking at what they put there. I've barely got enough time to live mine in the real world.

Pirate has saved my ass soooo many times in so many disciplines I have lost count. Facebook would not help me with the technical projects Pirate has. I'M the "smart" one of my friend set. Most of my friends come to me with their car/welding/HVAC problems. I come here!

We came here to this weird cross section of interests where there is usually someone who knows enough about what I am trying to do to set me on the right path to figure it out. Usually while calling me a cockholster for asking a stupid question without searching first. Which keeps me honest to do some research before expecting someone to hand me the answer. I appreciate that! Keeps me learning too.

Pirate is my Social Media until it flames out completely. I hope that never happens but all things change in life. Lance built a great thing here. Ahead of its time back then.

This x 1000. I've asked a ton of random way off topic questions here and there's always someone willing to tell you what they think about it, or that you're a complete fucktard, etc. This is my go-to place for odd info that I can't really get a straight answer for elsewhere.

Hell I don't even really wheel unless you call driving around on a muddy farm wheeling. I've always enjoyed lifted 4x4 vehicles and wanted to build a rock-crawler, it just never has happened yet... Life gets in the way, more important farm/work related projects keep popping up. I keep having less and less time to do the shit I've always wanted to do.

Everyone here forgets, it was Lance and his friends (employees?) that build the site.
It had more rock crawling coverage than any other website out there.
It had LIVE footage of the Baja 1000, that was better than anything SCORE or a trophy truck could produce.
The team here came up with the ideas and implemented them, when the ownership changed, they decided to not peruse any of that.
The Rock crawling comps are still happening, but no one is covering it.
