Hawaii (Big Island).... Off the beaten path...

We are going to Hawaii for a week.

Plan is to do the usual tourist stuff, and beach time.

Plan is 3 nights in Kona (resort/relaxing style), 1 in Hilo (Volcano/related stuff), then back to Kona for 3 nights (condo-exploring).

Lread have Papakolea Beach (green sands) and Kukio Bay on our list.

Looking for a few suggestions for places off the beaten path.
Rented a Jeep, so some hard to get to places would be cool. (not looking to fully wheel it, just want to go to places that non wheelers avoid/less crowds).

Planning doing a bunch of snorkling. Kids are 15/18, so relaxing on the beach, boogie boarding, possible surf lessons, stand up paddle board, are all of interest (we arent into organized tours etc.).

Pretty much all the places they tell you not to take the rental jeep!
Green sands is a cool area to explore, be sure to visit south point while you are in the area and jump off if you dare.
The waipio valley is worth the drive down.

The hamakua coast is neat for all the waterfalls and views.
Check out the makuu farmers market on Sunday and uncle Roberts mkt for some awesome eats.

Vacationland had some great snorkeling areas but I heard it got repaved with lava.

I'll be over there next month.

Take the saddle road up to Mona Kea and drive to the top.
Then drive the dirt road around the base of the mountain. Beautiful country.

If you do take out a rental Jeep; bring a 12 pack of beer. Locals won't strap you howie's out for less.

My aunt and uncle live on some land outside hilo. There is a zip line course that is supposed to be quite spectacular. Pusst of it goes through their property. I have yet to make it to Hawaii but some day I'll visit. Observatory is a must on my list.

All good tips. Black sand beach on the south end, green beach, and the southern most point in the US. Go to the top of Mauna Kea (bring a jacket it will be COLD) At the Ranger Station about halfway up they do a star gazing deal at night.

While on the Kona side:
Greenwell Farms for Kona Coffee.

Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park south of Kona/Captain Cook

Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kawaihae Road, Waimea, HI (north of Kona)

Not sure how much of Volcanoes National Park is open with the recent lava activity.

When on the Hilo side, Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls are cool. Akaka falls has a bit more hiking than Rainbow Falls.
