Long-distance bicycle peeps Spandex right on over....

A friend of mine, who is an avid bicycle dude, is planning to retire. Soon after, he will embark on a 2500 mile bucket list ride.

He will be travelling by himself and expects the trip to take a couple-three months.

I'd like to get him a retirement gift and was thinking of some sort of gadget for his bike and/or kit.

I know that what you carry on a ride like this tends to be specialized and personal preference. Plus, he probably already has most all he needs. But there is always something.

Does anyone have suggestions? Ideally, something I could Amazon.

(I ruled out a one-way ticket for his body and casket as overly rude.)

How about a big tube of butt-butter

Definitely something he'll use!

Don't bother with gadgets. If he is an avid cyclist, the last thing he needs is something else to both him on the trails. Also adds weight.

If not the butt butter, how about a gift certificate to a local bike shop for a tune-up or clothing?

Pre paid hotel room.
Sometimes he is just going to want a bed and a shower.

I’d go with this or a gift cert for some restaurant on his journey. He’ll appreciate a good nights rest or a warm meal and a drink.

Post up his route so when he is in their area, PBB members can drive up behind, blow their horns, roll coal as they pass or whatever they want to do to show their support.

Get him a SPOT tracker. That way if he is hurt and out of cell phone range he can summon EMS help by satellite. Not to mention his friends can track his journey on their computerized map and make sure he's still moving as expected. Cool thing is you can see him moving over the internet.
And He can just check in to all his designated followers that he's OK.
Something my wife loved about mine.
I'd hit I'm OK in the morning when I got up, at lunch, when I stopped for the night, and when I went to bed.

I use to do that bicycle stuff and then switched to ADV Bikes.

My SPOT has come in handy several times.
Especially out in Monument Valley!

So if you're serious about getting something really "Life Saving " useful that's my suggestion.

A flask. I ride best after a few shots.

Good lighting is critical, but he already probably has that covered. I run Surfas and Magicshine on techy singletrack well into the night and it's boss.

Some camping gear like a jetboil or something? Id talk to him if i were you. This is a thing where you won't want to Bring things that you don't need. See what he has and what he thinks he wants.

Seriously, get him a gift card here: https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/

He can pick his gift out, virtual certainty it's what he wants/needs. Yes it is UK but do (edit:due) to weird import license shit all the cycling shit is cheaper in England including shipping than here.

Nuun hydration tablets or Gu energy gel. Inexpensive and easy to pack in a bag.

Or a rechargeable aux battery for his phone. My friend has a solar charger on his handlebars that doesn't really work that great. Also easy to throw in a bike bag.

Skip a jetboil, MSR pocket rocket solo cook kit is where it's at.
