I toss together a PC every few years, really no fawks given as I'm not a gamer and a sysadmin by day and get plenty of exposure to 'puters at the day job. Sorry but no advice, except toss one together. It's a fairly brainless thing to do (mostly idiot proof). Last edited by FlexyTJ; 02-15-2019 at 06:07 PM. |

I'm doing light video editing on boards with on board video. Not into big transitions and shit yet. I let it render while I'm out doing something more interesting or at work.
No gaming here either. Next build will have a dedicated video card. |

Lol. I regularly hit 50~ gigs rendering 4K or bigger footage once I get AE running on all cores. I try to leave a little for the OS to avoid teh blue screen. If OP wants to get serious with editing, I wouldn’t rule out 64g. I’m debating jumping to 128g...
Or he can just deal with 24+ hour sequence renders. My deadlines simply won’t allow for that though.

I always build my own. For video editing your CPU and board are about as good as it gets unless you want to step up to Threadripper. Video card depends. Get the best your budget will allow. You can almost never have to much video card.

well some people are, but not as many percentage wise.. its like ford and cars.. they stopped making most models of cars, becuz most people want SUVs now.. its just what the demand is asking for.. sure its not a dead market, but it is a smaller market..

Now people in business, traveling, school, etc, yeah they are all about laptops because they are more convenient for them. But the PC parts industry is pretty strong right now and that can only come from people building and buying pre-built desktop systems. Personally, I fucking hate a slow-ass laptop. And I despise working on them. I have a nice, year old Dell with an i7 and AMD graphics that like to eat HDDs for whatever reason and constantly gets the Windows 10 boot loop. I am beyond tired of taking all the screws out of this fucking piece of shit.

Personally I would like to have a decent desk top unit with lots of memory, that would allow me to use the laptop for what it is supposed to be a portable computer not tied down to my desk.

Used to build PCs regularly. Haven't built anything other than my htpc in the last 5 years.
I get good bang-for-buck using yesterday's workstation-grade hardware. Also by stepping away from Windows and use Linux. (Ubuntu Mate right now.) Do you really need to handle HD and 4k video for youtube vids?

I haven't put together one since 1986 when I was in school, and we were putting them together for the computer school.

I've always built my boxes. One thing no one seems to have mentioned is get as much RAM as there are slots. After a while you always want more RAM. Sort of like compressed air.
I use Intel and not AMD. I also run Linux and not Windows as do the vast majority of servers in the world. BTW, I'm paid to keep ~700 servers running and have been doing computer nonsense since the early 80s. |

Ever tried upgrading a laptop? It may be possible but it sure as hell is a nightmare to do a new chip since they're soldered. Anybody that needs to do more than run office still has a desktop. They just stay relevant way longer since you can swap the board, chips, add 6 hdd's, etc. The new desktop I built for my wife is stupid fast and won't be out of date for a few years for her purposes. When she needs it I'll pull out the ryzen 3 and put in a current gen ryzen 7 in a couple years to boost the speeds back up. The beauty of AMD support, they don't make you buy a new mb every time you want a new CPU.

And I never said anything about what market was stronger, just that you were ridiculously wrong with your retarded statement that "no one builds desktops anymore". Start thinking more about what is coming out of your mouth instead of putting words in mine.

Having a discussion with you is like arguing with someone who has a 3 word vocabulary. I might be a jackass, but you are simpleton moron who obviously is blissfully unaware of exactly how fucking stupid you really are.

I paid the rent building and fixing PCs between grad school and my first "real job." I only came across a few laptops with a soldered CPU, and they were usually fairly budget models. All the mainstream Dells, Lenovos, Gateways, HPs, and Toshibas I had to go that deep into had socketed CPUS. I have a bad habit of taking old laptops that are "obsolete" cheap and/or free, and upgrading them with whatever the highest end compatible CPU I can find on eBay is, maxing the RAM, and sticking an SSD in it. A 5-8 year old laptop then becomes comparable to a low end modern laptop.
