Was there for 3 months. The wife and I are happy we never made a permanent move there. The Cuban restaurant, only one there and Spitfire Pizza, which makes a Detroit style pizza, was very good. My new fav pizza.

Anacortes wa.... Its right on the puget sound.... Stays relatively mild temp wise. More sunshine than seattle. Less people than you wanted, but most all the resources are there. Anacortes is getting pricey but just outside town like burlington is cheaper. 1hr to seattle and just south of canadian border. Ferry to san juan islands or victoria canada

There are some great spots in Idaho. Boise is not among them.

That sounds pure fucking awful for so many reasons.

That place is shithole, I grew up in Hillsboro, couldn’t leave fast enough. Honestly I’ll never understand why people think it’s great.

As you get older good health care is another consideration. Any location that fits your criteria won't have the housing prices that you seek.
I hate living in California but my wife has some health issues that require being near great health care. We've been considering the Boise,
Idaho area but Californians (LA,SF) and Seattle people have driven up prices to the point it would be a even swap selling here-buying there.
I have my late parents ranch up in North, Idaho but what seems like nine months of winter doesn't appeal to me any longer. Most of the
neighboring farmers and ranchers have all died young from lack of health care or winter accidents.
Maybe my son will get tired of CA and move on the ranch, we still hunt there and lease out what we can.
Anyway everyone including me are looking for that perfect place to spend our "Golden Years" but it gets more elusive every day. Good luck

Spokane....? Really a no brainer in your situation. Cheap as fuck, great healthcare, better than Cali. Or even coeur d'alene if you want Idaho.

Once you're out of multnomah county prices drop dramatically and it actually is 2A friendly. OR is an open carry state. Salem fits the bill better than anywhere around Portland within 30 miles. Property is getting outrageous though. CA cash buyers are driving prices through the roof. Literally. Anything under 400k is getting swallowed up within a week and developers are going nuts asking at least 350 for anything new.

My pick would be San Diego if I could afford it.
Ah Gotcha, kinda figured that was the case with Portland!
It was kinda of getting that way when they moved back here to AZ about 2-3 Years ago, with the CA invasion... Trust me we see it here in Phx as well!

They were in Dallas, but it sounds a little too remote for the OP... You could get some decent land for fairly cheap not too long ago...

Southern Utah is on my radar....Kanab area or possibly Panguitch - when I retire.

Arizona is getting too crowded with Californians that are trying to turn this state blue. In another 10 years, republican led anything here will be a memory. Plus I'm sick of the heat. I want seasons again, but not ridiculously cold winters like Wyoming where I grew up.

October-ish. And they were mostly on dirt roads.

Ah, they were in the Kolob Canyon area, not the main canyon. Yeah, that area is a LOT less crowded.
