Tech in GCC - 2005 BMW X5 3.0

Coworker needs fuel injectors according to the stealership... $1200

Never done BMWs, but have done FI before in 90's 5.0 Fords

Should I help or run away? What would I be getting into if I undertook this job?

No pics of coworker - he's not my type....

More common that you thinks. But coming from the dealership I would be semi hesitant, however def a known issue.

Cheap after market, lots of BS work to do but nothing difficult, lots of info on the google box.

Not really, I've seen singles take a shit. Only reason I can think is that it has a po171/172 and they wanna shotgun a set of injectors in. Prolly just needs the cbpv/valve cover done.

Def could be just a single one, but they are gonna upsell.

It runs like crap... I heard it when he drove in, and asked what was up... that is when I got the story... Unless cbpv can cause a significant change in how it runs....

And it is not diesel.

Another vote for “it doesn’t need 6 injectors”.

They are probably easier to replace than on a 5.0 Ford.

The videos I watched indicated excessive smoke with a PCV issue.

Guy only has 1 vehicle, so trying to make sure I am right before I start in and leave him stranded.

Am I overthinking it?

I know nothing about those but aren't there any codes? I'd think it would tell you which are bad...

they're also known for leaks in the intake manifold.
check the rubber boot elbow thingy thoroughly, especially the y piece that comes up to the idle air valve, and where the disa plugs into the manifold.

nows the time to build a paint can smoke machine.

I would think that a dealer would have checked it, since they're known issues, but you never know.

and regarding codes.

tell dude to buy a $20 kcan adapter on amazon, and setup ista on a laptop.

tell you everything you need to know. The obd codes are pretty useless.

ISTA is a pain in the ass for a n00b to set it up.
M54 doesn't need injectors. maybe 1, not 6.
probably needs a PCV system under the intake.
Throw a DISA valve in it too.
Replace the air boot to the throttle.
MAF would probably be good to clean at least if not replace.
Where are you located I'll see if I know an indy shop near you.

No, go find a competent indy and let him fix it is the correct answer.
