I would much rather be in your situation than the OP's situation. Good work.

I totally get that. Transportation is a constant line in her mental budget. It never goes away. Itís like rent on an apartment, or food.

She would be happy in a lease if she didnít drive too many miles.

Youíve attached some value to it like itís some type of asset. She has not.

I like not having a car payment & donít mind driving shit, but I got no hate for those that hold the idea of it just being a indefinite monthly expense, and always driving nice, newer stuff.

I guess I picked a good one, I had to pry mine out of her almost 300k mile Explorer because I was tired of fixing the damn thing, Got her in a Pontiac Vibe (same drivetrain as a Corolla) because I knew it would be the same deal and I wanted it to last 300K+. So far so good and much less maintenance. Also we paid off her 48 month note in 22 months. We have a policy in our marriage that big purchases need to be discussed, especially when loans are involved.

POSFORD, didn't you just buy a house you can barely afford?

As everyone else has said do not under any circumstances buy a Mitsubishi, they are crap.
Car payments suck, owing 10K on a 7 year old cute sucks, but at least Rav 4s are reliable.

Pay off the car and stay out of dealerships until you actually need something new. If the wife can't figure it out, it may be time for some financial counseling.

I hate to rub it in but I would vote for a Toyota over a Mitsubishi...

For the cute wife;
Finances/Loan rate/Make of model responses put forth by pirate members shouldn't be challenged... They are spot on & is to protect + safeguard you & hubby. This is not an opinion, this is truth proven by experience, reality bites and past deeds-

My wife is the same way. Traded in her paid-off Honda Pilot and bought her a 2018 Tahoe (6-month loan, paid off yesterday) but she continues to drive her 2009 Subaru Outback with 170k on it.

Can't understand the logic of buying a new car when the old one isn't even paid off.

I'd keep the Toyota over the Mitsu and you wouldn't catch me dead in a Toyota.

You and posford should trade wives.

I rented one one way to Chicago (250 miles) and while not horrible, it sure seemed small. I would never want one especially over a Rav4. I won't even get into the poor financial decision it is

I got lucky, with my wife she found a 2014 VW jetta in 2015 with 15K on the odometer, we paid 13,900.00 for it. I use it as my daily. It get about 30 MPG. I drive a shit load for work and get paid .56 per mile. I just rolled 100K on it the last week. The dealer we bought it from threw in lifetime oil changes and tire rotations. I have only had to put tires on it, nothing else.

We paid it off in less than a year.

I bought a new Ram 1500 last year, financed 49K for 60 months, traded it in last week on a new JL for her. The dealer was expecting us to be under water. They gave me 43K for the truck and I only owed 30K on it.

Get her mind right, or you guys are gonna be broke quick.

OP you slacker, tell her she is beautiful way more often and bring some fucking flowers then she won't want to fill that gap of missing love with a new car.

There. I said it. .!.

Your wife needs to learn control.

Or just read a book by Dave Ramsey.

She better be fucking amazing in bed, stellar in the kitchen, and hotter than the sun if she's making financial decisions like that.

Monthly car payments are for FOOLs and Poor Money Managers.

Anytime you buy a depreciating asset, It's value drops the second it leaves the parking lot. That is a purchase best made by cash, and best made on used automobiles. Let some other FOOL take the new depreciation hit before you buy it.

The only reason to make a car payment is to drive up your credit rating for future unforseen financial needs. Then you should make the minumim number of payments that improve your Credit Ratings, then pay it off. Usually 3 to 6 months!

You will use that good credit rating to get better rates for buying houses.

Paying interest for a USED Car is just nuts. You'd be better off buying a new ZERO % financing automobile at the Dealership. You'll be paying more for it, and still taking a hit on the depreciacion, but you'lll not get hosed on interest. Choose how you want to throw away your hard earned money.

I drive a 2000 TD Dodge 3500 Ram Quad Cab that looks and drives like it did new.
I bought it used in 2001. I paid half of what the original purchaser paid for it. (New $32,990,, My price $16,400 And, I paid cash. So I've only made one car payment on it. It had 24K miles on it when I bought it. (Original purchaser didn't like the noisey 24 Valve Cummins.)

It's got 230K miles on it and owes me nothing. Been saving for my new used truck for 19 years. But, will probably drive my Dodge until it dies or is wrecked beyond repair.. Which means I may never buy another one. I LIKE this truck. It's got everything I need. And I can always do some upgrades.

My wife drive a 2006 Toyota 4 Runner. It too looks and drives like it's new. My wife bought it in 2008, so it was 2 years old when she drove it home.. She paid half what it cost the original buyer. She' paid cash for it. ( New $29,000 Her price $15,000) She sold her 10 year old paid off Miata to buy it.

She has already saved up enough cash for her next vehicle.
It's in an Investment account earning interest.

I do all our maintenance and I would drive either of my current street vehicles across country with nothing more than an oil change prior.

To trade down from a Toyota to a Mitubushi????? That's just crarzy, and Car Salesmen put food on their table for years from selling to people like her.

Keep the Toyota, speed up the payoff and then drive it and save up for your next vehicle.
You're upside down in it anyway. GEt right side up ASAP. So you could sell it then replace it for a beater until she can pay cash for the next nice car.

My son buys used Volvos for under $3000 that are still in good shape all around. They usually have the AC needing repair, and he can fix that himself. He usually drives them 2 years then sells then for a profit. Go Figure!

(I once got a speeding ticket in his 6 year old 740 Turbo. 124 in a 55, But I was in a corner when I saw the Trooper, so I had no warning he was coming around the bend.)
Just trowing away money on the speeding ticket, but what a grin I had on my face!

Just bought the wife a Toyota certified pre owned RAV4 V6 AWD with 15k miles for $18k out the door. When we were signing the paperwork other salesmen were harassing our salesman about where the car was because he had people wanting to buy it.

Forget the car situation. That's been well covered.

Sounds like you and your wife aren't on the same page financially. Get that ironed out or it's going to be rough until the divorce. This is just a sign of her knowledge and thoughts on finances/ money.

Very true. People ask me often 'should I fix it or should I get a new car?'. I'll try to breakdown pros and cons of both, but I always end up telling them that driving is an expense and it's up to them to decide how much to spend and how to spend it.

Pos- wait until this fades a little, then explain how the typical car finance model they push is really a money grabbing scam. Lay out some numbers. Tell her if she really wants a new car, and it works with the long term budget, she can. Just plan it out and make it a rational decision, not an emotional one. Good luck

And don't fucking buy a Mitsubishi.
