I don't know fuckall about mobile phones, but I have this anecdodal report (which probably won't affect your particular situation):

The "newer" smarty phones don't have nearly the range that the old flip phones had. I'm not really sure where the blackberry comes in at (more flip or more smart...).

Where I fish on Lake Abitibi, my partner has been trying to find a place to get a cell phone signal for emergencies (like standing on a rock on an island...).

Never been able to get one, not even to send a text.

This year another buddy came fishing and had a green flip phone (samsung I think). He was cutting some wood on the nearest island and decided to call his wife. Phone made the call no problem, nice and clear.

I've heard this from several friends as well.

I have a J-something that I got there 3 yrs ago. It is prepaid and phone was $79. I swear i dropped it, threw it, and tried to break it many times as an excuse to upgrade but still using it.

I like prepaid without stupid contracts.

Most of the Moto's that Google and Amazon have will work on AT&T, if you want tough, Costco has a Cat branded one that's AT&T compatible (but $350) and has a monster battery. I'm not sure if it's in stores or online only (or if you have a Costco card, but the PBB has its ways if you "need" to make it happen). The Moto's are portable onto other networks too, which for me is a big plus (I have AT&T for my work phone, in my area, service is spotty, and in the mountains, the not-spots get bigger than the have's). That may or may not be of any concern for you.

I can't speak to toughness of the Moto yet, feature-wise, for the $150 price point, I'm very pleased. Thinking pretty hard about getting two more (one for wife and one for kiddo's first phone). Biggest complaint is size, I got the smallest phone Google offers and it's still huge, it's the same height, but a little wider, than my iphone7 (not plus, just regular 7, which is a huge phone to me anyway).

Be careful on the fine print on Straight Talk buy-outright phones, many are CDMA (generally Verizon network, not AT&T) only, they're a good deal if you want Straight Talk service (my wife is on it, and very happy with it) but may not be portable to AT&T at all. But they're great value-for-price phones. My wife's is a Samsung J3 Luna (I think discontinued) and it was cheap and has been near-perfect for her for a couple years now.

maybe up there, but down here they have been changing the way the jibbly bits are sent through the air for the last several years. signal for older phones is getting worse while the newer network styles are getting better.

I had to upgrade my 2g and edge network phone to a 4g phone to get the coverage area back. still anecdotal and tmobile generally sucks, but be aware that eventually the shift will happen more and more

I got a V30 because it's got a badass DAC and will read high res audio files. Yeah I'm an audio geek.

It does have a nice display, but I wouldn't consider it rugged.
