Also they have the Acela express on that route which is about 30 minutes quicker.

DC to Boston is pretty much the best operating section of rail that Amtrak has
Any other first world country and that journey would be more like 2 hours by train. Maybe not Canada.

And DC to Boston is basically the only significant section of track in the country that Amtrak owns, basically everything else is run over freight company owned tracks. Naturally, they managed a good wipeout on their own tracks in Philly just a couple of years ago.

Acela does much better NYC-DC than Boston-NYC.

Train travel in the south east blows. I checked train departures in my area. Incredibly inconvenient times.

I would use amtrac as a last resort really. Railroad infrastructure prioritizes commercial shipping anyways.

Iím not an expert here but amtrack owns 623 miles of track. Thatís 2.5% of rail of the 21,400 miles they travel upon.

Coal plants are winding down now but they are hungry pigs. You donít want that to go offline. The delays in Amtrak I am accustomed to is to sit out while cargo is being moved which is part of the game. Someone has to wait...

Perhaps less coal in the lines will reduce congestion in the future?

Trust me they are not going to stick an Amtrak for a freight on any freight railroad. Everyone clears a path for Amtrak unless something derails or fails otherwise. You can argue that them just being on a freight railroad is counterproductive and I would agree, but that freight railroad does everything they can to get that Amtrak through on time.

Amtrak pays the host railroads to operate and they have performance goals tied to that money every month. If a RR doesn't want Amtrak mucking things up then they don't take them.
