Return of the Big Boy 4014 and 844 will roll through Laramie Wy. 12:30 MT

The refit of the 4014 known as big boy is complete and today it and the smaller 844 will start in Laramie Wy and race to Ogden UT in commemoration of the completion of the Transcontinental railroad 150 years ago
5 years ago it was removed from the Fairplex Parking lot in Pamona CA.

There is another big boy on display in Cheyenne in one of the parks. Definitely a must see for train lovers. It is HUGE!

I have an old Popular Mechanics buried somewhere in the house showing the maintenance that was done between runs to turn them around and head them back including some poor shlub crawling into the hot fire box to check it for cracks!

I had a friend talking about going up there to check it out, but he has to work today and it was just to far for me to drive.

Saw the one at least, I'm guessing this is from the UP yard in Nebraska, back in 1998 or so when they all met up in Sacramento for railfair in that year.

SP also had a similar locomotive that pulled thru the feather river canyon that I remember seeing at the same time.

ETA: It was 1999 not 1998, memory is off a bit in 20 years.

An incredible amount of work to get that up and running. An equal amount to keep it running. So cool to hear them breathing.

What the world would be like if technology had been frozen right at that point.

We did not need magic to get shit done.

Interesting thought experiment.

Man I wish I could see that thing rolling up one of the passes under full load. The closest I can get is go visit the one in the greenbay train museum.

While it wouldn't be the same as seeing in person I am sure there will be plenty of videos showing it. Including those from UP themselves

That is what it has become the original idea was what if technology had stopped in the steam age

Interesting. Personally I would have stopped the clock in the late 40s.

Discrete components, analog circuits.

Digital gave us everything and ruined everything.
