I got it a few years ago, had to go every Monday for 16 weeks. Not bad honestly, I still got paid from work and often the sessions got out early or cancelled entirely because someone couldn't make it.

But yes - here they assign each Grand Jury particular categories of cases. Mine was drugs, weapons, official misconduct, and crimes against minors. Often the undercover cop assigned to a case would come in to give a testimony about a particular transaction, and you realize that 1) this guy nails the 'undercover' thing and 2) how many of these transactions are occurring in the bathroom at your local Applebees, or the parking lot of the 7-11, or the house around the corner from the school. Amazing to me how many people had additional charges tacked on for being within a certain distance of a school zone.

We also had to look at child porn. Evidence gathered from someone's computer, printed out and passed around so we could lawfully determine that the charges were justified. That was not a fun day.

But, it was interesting weeks later to read in the paper about a child porn ring that got busted up, or a large drug cartel based out of Newark/Jersey City area that had dozens of arrests and millions of dollars of product seized, or some mid-level bureaucrat got nailed for taking bribes from contractors...and know that I was on that panel that advanced those things to the courtroom and eventual conviction.

Petit jury duty sucks, but at the end of it I thought the Grand Jury thing was pretty rewarding and glad to be a part of it. I wouldn't mind doing that again.

Today my day consisted of

Domestic violence/strangulation. Guy allegedly beating up on his girlfriend.

Sodomy/multiple counts. 11 year old boy who’s father was in a three way male relationship had one of his partners allegedly teaching “sex education”

Rape/multiple counts. 14 year old girls ten year older uncle allegedly raping and molesting her since she was 5.

Vehicle theft/identification theft. Man allegedly stole a car and ran from the cops. Credit card numbers, stole mail, and stole checks found in the car.

Your name is pulled from the DMV and voter registration database at random.
It has nothing to do with your voting preferences.

I was on it for six months and could be called in with only a few hours notice. I got called in about 14 times in the six months.

There is a lot of bad crap that goes on the general public probably wouldn't believe.

had it a few years ago. Here we only one grand jury for the county for 12 weeks, we got all the cases in those 12 weeks.

You learn alot about what goes on around you. I learned you don't want to stay at 75% of the hotels in this area as they are dealing drugs or prostitutes out of them. Only ran across a 1 name i knew in all the cases we had (a few hundred over the 12 weeks)

Learned a lot more of the pedophilia is around than you would think. I didn't mind the grand jury at all, would happily do it again. No want to ever be on a petit jury however.

What do you mean by “Grand” summons? If you mean federal, I did a couple years back, and was the real deal. Local summons is a joke and filled with smelly dirtbags.

I did 6 months on our County Grand Jury.
An eye opener for sure.
Got to hear all kinds of cases and only had to excuse myself from one.

One of my good friends was involved with dealing with a crazy Police Chief who came to my house stalking him. Since I was a potential witness to this looney bird I excused myself from the vote. But I got to hear the evidence on one condition. I could not agree, disagree nor show any emotions to the others on the Jury that might sway the panels decision when they presented the evidence to the other GJ members. And could not tell them what I knew of the case. It was nuts!

My buddy won and the Chief lost his job and badge. He can never work in Law Enforcement ever again.

The former Chief now drive a truck for a living. No jail time...
But he almost got 2 years.

Apparently our little town is on the drug smugglers main highway between Colorado and New Orleans. They bust a lot of stupid mules out just 3 miles from my house. (Another reason I'm always armed.) (Crazy Ex Con BIL is the other reason.)

We got paid $40 for a half day every two weeks.

Here, Grand jury hears every case to decide if it should go to trial. It is still local level, not federal. instead of hearing an entire individual case, you hear the basics of a bunch. we sent 99% on to trial, only a few were tossed out at our level.

In our county, you are summoned for jury duty, then a random draw of the juror pool dictates who is on grand jury. Everyone else goes to petit jury to hear individual cases.

I always wondered about the jury system: "Being judged by a jury of your peers":

What criminals like the guy on trial?

Never been called to Grand Jury. Was called to jury duty in federal court once. I wasn’t selected, the judge said the ones that weren’t selected could stick around and watch. I decided to hang around and watch. The case was a guy who owed tens of thousands in taxes. He chose to represent his self. The judge pretty much begged him to get a lawyer. He declined. Then the irs attorneys started rolling in carts filled with evidence. Like ten carts full. Five attorneys. I thought to myself, this guy is fucked and he doesn’t even know it.

I did. One Friday a month for six months here.

Can be interesting, can be funny, can be horrifying. I heard the absolute most heinous crime against an 11 month old. I almost quit the first day from just the introduction (it lasted the whole session, hearing testimonies and such). I got really lucky and coincidentally took the day off they heard the case in it's entirety.

I remember the first day none of the jurors had really begun talk to each other. After about 6 or 8 cases after we voted I said kind of out loud, "Well that's two cops I've been pulled over by." About half laughed and half kind of gasped. Figured out who was cool and who was derp pretty quickly after that. By the end I saw several cops I knew and one defendant. Apparently one of my parts guy liked to float checks.

And druggies are fucking stupid. Got heroin in the car and you're the only one driving at 2 am? Stop at the fucking stop light. Got a pocket full of meth? Just because the cop recognizes you on the street, don't consent to a search, dumbass.

Funny, we only voted down one indictment. It is pretty much a rubber stamp process. Either prosecutors really have their shit together by the time it gets to grand jury, or the system is set up to skim on by that step. Probably both.

Beats the hell out of petit jury, at least.

Pretty sure op isn’t supposed to talk about it. But I ain’t telling nobody.

I just testified to one! Daughters fuck head boyfriend was driving way past his abilities lost control rolled car. Daughter escaped with minor injuries her friend in the back is permanently fucked up. I had previously seen this kid playing Tokyo drift in parents f150. Called his parents they laughed. 6 months later this happens. He’s looking at 70 months at 17 years old.

Daughter finally dumped him I think because I didn’t make her so as to not cause Romeo Juliet syndrome.

I know cool starry.

this.

also registered libertarian.

they still called me for jury duty.

though apparently after questioning the prosecutor decided to exclude me from the jury pool.

I guess "the war on drugs is immoral and unamerican" was not the answer he was looking for.

Sorry but fukk that. Unless you're paying me hourly, 24 hours a day, I'm not giving up 6 months of my life since I could be called in at any moment.

Stuff like this is what makes me

I've not been on a Grand Jury (though have been nearly chosen for the final few on a local Jury for a case I was rather hoping not to be on).

But the issue to me is how badly it can fawk over a lot of people. I understand it's a civic duty, but until they make it so that it doesn't financially hurt, very few want to be any part of it.

Hell, here it was something like $50 a day, it wasn't even minimum wage before any taxes. We're a large county, so such to be you if it takes well over an hour each way to get in.

Luckily I have plenty of time off usable, and my employer covers two days of it. I felt bad for the small business owners who were still scrambling to try and figure out coverage, or those who had no personal time available to cover it.

Got notification to report May 31st for Grand Jury duty.
Company compensates first 2 weeks, after that on your own.
Since I firmly believe in capital punishment and think we should bring back public executions, not sure I will make the cut.

Maybe maybe not. GJ just establishes if a case has enough merit to go to court based on evidence available...

Regular jury stuff is where ones opinion like that can be used for dismissal by the lawyers involved and provided its a capital criminal trial, not all are...

Yep, that. Honestly I don't even think there was an interview or selection process when I did it. It's basically this:

- prosecutor states the charges they want to bring
- prosecutor reads the law and what the criteria are for the charges
- prosecutor presents their side of the case
- grand jury decides if evidence meets the criteria per the law

You then have the option to say yes it does, no it doesn't, or yes but with reduced severity (2nd degree instead of 1st degree, etc). You're only hearing the state's side of things, not deciding innocence or guilt.

As said above, if they have their shit together, it's almost a rubber-stamp process. I think we only completely turned down one or two cases (and the disappointed look on the guy's face was priceless). A few times we reduced the charges but otherwise there's usually a reason they selected what they did.

My company policy for jury duty was they'd cover up to 3 consecutive days with full pay. So 16 Mondays in a row was no problem and a bit of a loophole

Yep. Just look at the sex offender database. Holy hell there are a ton of them living around me. I realize some of them are bullshit, but I believe that to be the minority in that group. Dozens around town, some just a few streets over.

Now, being a libertarian certainly DOES get your ass out of jury selection on the first day in most cases. I had a felon in possession of a handgun case I was in the pool for and I was the first to raise my hand in a room of 99 other shy people. "Once a man has served his time shouldn't he have all of his rights reinstated? It seems he's either done the time, or he's being punished for life and being stripped of the ability to defend himself" and few other similar statements seemed to do the trick, since I was losing money if I got selected. I was in the front right corner of the room, so it was very obvious when the female attorney standing nearby put an X on my seat position. They let potential juror #1 leave before anybody else that day, about 20 minutes before lunch.

It depends if you get a Capital case. But it does cover felony hearings like robbery, rape, etc-

Stuff like this is what makes me
I was an "On Call" juror one summer over in Gunnison, CO. Had to be able to reach the courthouse within 30 minutes of being called. The reason for the "On Call" status? Covering the call offs for vacation plans (Yes, you could call in like once a year with this and be excused) and people not showing up. Wasnt terrible, but never got called (just couldnt really do anything). Worst part was we had a fire in our house and was living out of a hotel room while we rebuilt.

Havent had but 2 maybe 3 notices (different town now) since. Tis was back in the mid Nineties. Never been close to being picked again.
