How to disable my airbag *gasp*

So my Mom drives a 2002 Ford Taurus that I believe has one of the Takata airbags that have been killing people. So far her car hasn't been recalled for the airbag, but I know this recall is being done piece meal as they can't do them all at once, and since the recall applies to the year right close to hers I suspect hers eventually will be recalled as well. Either way I don't want to take the chance, and here's why...

The explanation for why these things are going off is there's some defect in the manufacturing that when the air bag is exposed to humid conditions and lots of temp fluctuations, something in them weakens and there they go. Mom's Taurus has a windshield leak so, even though it's never smelled, there's always been a virtual puddle of water in driver's side floor board. So the inside of the car has always been humid, just like in the airbag explosion scenarios.

So, for the time being, until she gets into another car, I'd like to disconnect her airbag to be on the safe side. She is an amazingly vigilant driver, never even a speeding ticket, and the risk of her rear ending someone is virtually non-existent.

How would I go about disabling an airbag on a 2002 Ford Taurus?

Or, alternatively, how do I open the steering wheel column, or front of the steering wheel, which might be part of the disabling process itself, and identify if Mom's airbag is indeed one of the defective types?

Theres 2 fuses in a yellow cage, pull them out.
Theres at the most 4 screws on the back of the steering wheel holding the airbag pod to the wheel body.
Pull them and when the air bag is in your lap touch a 9v battery to the wire ends to disable it

First off, the airbag does NOT randomly go off, the high humidity capitalizes the dry chemical in the inflator, increasing the charge/expansion rate of the chemical, but it will has to be triggered.

Second, run her VIN through the NHTSA recall website, see if there's a recall. If not, and you want piece of mind, look at the inflator cartridge itself, and see if it is Tamara brand.

Easy peasy....
Look under the steering column where all the wiring come out from up by the steering wheel. Its a good sized harness.

Among all those wires will be a 2 wire harness inside of a yellow conduit. This is the airbag harness.

Slice the yellow conduit open to expose 2 wires inside.

Strip the insulation off of those 2 wires carefully, without cutting the actual conductor in half.

Now attach 2 test leads to those wires you just stripped. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Just 2 lengths of wire about 3 ft long each, and twist them onto the airbag wires.

Now with the drivers seat in a comfortable position and you sitting in it, connect your test leads to a 9-volt battery.

If you’ve done everything correctly, all the lights should go out and problem solved. Good luck.

Jackie Treehorn, try actually reading my post you stupid fuck. Second sentence clearly indicates the recall hasn't included the '02 taurus, yet.

Lots of you people are really stupid fucks here. Your social development took a seriously wrong turn way way back. Some are ok but for those that aren't, just taking the time to write me to give an insult shows you're just as a group amazingly negative people.

Help her buy proving to us how fucking dumb you are?

Pull the fuses
Pull the bag.

30sec on google/youube and you would have been handled. Your mistake was thinking we gave a fuck about her, you doubled down by thinking we gave a fuck about your dumbass spoon sucking cunt ass.

You were helped, but instead of reading it, doing it, then taking to credit, you got but hurt and mouthy and attempted to mock others reading ability.

Bradly, youve been here long efuckingnough to have seen how this was going to pan out, particularly with your continued insistance of dumbass posts like this one. Now fuck off

nope, not really.

I see no reason why you should even bother keeping it. Sell it for $1000 and turn around and buy something pre-96 (ish?) so that you don't have to worry about airbags for the same price. odds are you will get a better car.

how about a lincoln town car? any early 90's buick is a great mom car.

Full size van is really the ideal solution anyways, but you should really look at other things before buying her one of those so that it feels like she chose it on her own.

^^Best advice yet. This should do the trick. Hard to sort through all the insults for the good advice sometimes but here it is.
