i had this problem with a remanned distributor one time, it just would not go in the engine.

long story short, when they bead blasted the housing, it "knurled" enough to be too large of a diameter to fit. two minutes with a file, and it dropped right in.

Might check the diameters of the new to the old with a caliper or mic to make sure they are the same

It is, I tried pulling up on it and it does not come up, it is down and seems to move like it should when I rotate it with a screw driver

Does not seem to be gunked up.

Yup, that is what I have been doing

I used a caliper and everything is on size.

After thinking on it today I think the issue is the adapter stem from the oil pump up to the dist. It can float- front-back / left-right. It wants to sit back, hence why I tried to get some grease down there to hold it straight up and down.

Talking to some guys at work and they agreed that they have seen this before. I am going to tried to fit a small o-ring over the stem and get it to stay vertically upright, instead of leaned back. It is all I can come up with at this point. I think I can set it over my long needle nose and get down to it, if I can get it over I can just work it down to the top of the oil pump and hopefully get it to act as a support.

If the rain holds off I am going to go give it a shot.

The proper dist for the 'marine' engine should be here tonight as well. So I will have another one to double compare with.

I really think it is that the pump shaft is not sitting perfectly upright though.

Stock shafts are centered on the pump with a plastic sleeve. Good aftermarket shafts have a steel sleeve pinned to the shaft so the shaft won't come out the top, it has to go out the bottom with the pump.

The shaft should be centered enough but an o ring or a piece of tubing will hold it centered.

If I had to guess, this is stock, and that sleeve is either worn out or gone.

These sleeves get brittle with age and end up in the pan in pieces.

https://www.ebay.com/p/Engine-Oil-Pu...UaArvHEALw_wcB

This is the good shaft that you might have, being a marine application it very well could be stock.

Yup, I just hopped on e-gay and searched some. Seems hit or miss if they have the plastic sleeve, and those that do it looks rough.

I may go with that, I am sure I have some hose/plastic around that will fit, give it a bit more rigidity.

Thanks

Ok, but BUT if you don't have it on the water 'boating' in an hour, its going to be $2,500 plus towing fees...

I have been boating a few times this summer; just not on this boat ha.

Anyhow. I am still at a loss. I cut and slipped a 1/2" ID hose over the oil pump shaft, it def centered it up. But this thing still wont seat. It was dark and raining so I did not try all that much before I called it. but something seems not right.

I feel I have at least a low to moderate handle on things mechanical. Not sure what I am missing. The Boat vs of the dist is here, but I was hoping to not install it until I confirmed it will fire - part of why I bought the cheap 'car' version.

I may go fuck with it some more. Something stupid has to be going down here.

I feel I can trust you guys here.... really I do....

So I found the problem... the source of the problem is up for debate, non the less it is resolved.

Turns out I done fucked up.

I jumped the gun when it would not go in the first time, and started fucking with shit. I swapped the drive gears from the original to the new, some how I flipped it. I am normally OCD about stuff like that but it happened.

After that it was a down hill battle against myself.

Tonight I decided fuck it, I am going to put the new 'boat' one in and see what happens. But the drive tang has no lead ins, so I pull the gear and grind some lead ins on (still thinking that I can not locate on the oil pump shaft)

Go to put the gear back on and noticed that how I laid it out is not how the other ones are... whoops...

Fucked up part is I am an asshole when it comes to laying parts out as they came off- esp at work. And I done gone fucked myself up on it.

Ironically it dropped RIGHT in after the gear was on right, and the oil pump shaft was upright and aligned.

Now back to your regularly scheduled fuckery.

Yes, well on ether. Carb is not on, and new fuel pump not installed.

But I have spark, and a shot of ether made her fire for a split second. Good enough for me, for the night. I REALLY want to keep going but should stop.... we will see.

I knew it was something stupid that I was missing. I just did not realize how stupid...

I am a mix of kicking myself for doing that, and fully ecstatic that it will fire. I mean still not out of the woods yet, but I can at least see the first clearing.

Only problem with that is I know myself... now the check book is a blank check--- well not quite yet--- but soon.

Moral of the story- always check yourself. I got complacent and rushed through something, and it bit me in the ass. I bite I hope not to forget anytime soon!

Been there, done that. Amazing what I can miss when tired/frustrated/banging my head against the wall that sticks out like a sore thumb even to an untrained eye.

Yup. It was one of those- Red Forman 'Dumbass' moments. So much so I just started to laugh.

Shit happens, but still I mean of all the simple things that made me think I was loosing my mind.

And I I think I am 180 out. And honestly with all the fucking around I did I don't recall if I actually reset TDC when I got the dist to seat.

Cranks good, but is popping out the carb, tells me timing is not right.

I get everything 180 out at least 80 percent of the time. Injection pumps especially.

you could always just swap the wires across the cap to make it right

Looks like 180 and a tooth. Just gonna re set it.

This is why I hate having to start/stop on projects. You walk away and forget where you left off.

All good. I think I got her now. About to reset and re wire- normally I would not rewire mid trying something, but I am feeling crazy
