Maybe we can shut off the grid to avoid the weather.

That would be the intelligent thing to do, it would do away with the yearly cost of paying tree crews to trim overhanging branches, pole replacements, and get rid of most of their lineman. However, seeing how utility companies have a captive customer, when it comes to saving the company, they get to operate more like a government agency than a private company.

That said, we need to get our forests in check and selectively log again. This no logging crap is what's to blame.
By “Santa Rosa” are you referring to the Tubbs Fire? If so, the “Paradise one” dwarfed it by every metric; over 3x the average, over 3x the structures and over 3x the fatalities. Tubbs leveled a subdivision, the Camp Fire leveled an entire town, and several smaller communities.

underground kinda sucks even here where it is dirt and sand
I can't imagine running it through rocks

also isn't it limited to rather low voltage?

In individual communities, sure but not for the transmission lines. I’ve seen them every state that I can remember being in. For our particular area, the terrain can be steep and the mountains are solid granite.

It’s more limited to being cost productive and not by voltages.

Just another idiot who thinks he knows me, but is totally clueless.
You didn't have anything approaching a rational thought, it was
pure fantasy. Don't like being called out on your total bullshit, tough.

No way!!!

Before I moved up here I owned a house off Scripps Poway Parkway.

The fire burned part of Scripps Ranch; just to the South of my old neighborhood.

So do they have to inspect every line before they can turn it back on? Who's to say that a tree doesn't fall during these projected high winds and start a fire as soon as they flip the switch?

I have no understanding of the utility industry

today's weather forecast calls for slightly above temps but very low humidity. the 7 day forecast show no signs of electricity anywhere...

Wut ? Are you a fookin geologist now ??

You and your other Southers down there. You are aware that oldest archaeological evidence of Homo sapiens in the entire western hemisphere was in San Diego County ? Cracked Mastodon bones, fractures sourced only from being smashed by rocks. Bout 125,000 years BP. To eat the marrow. {gary} ?? Is that you ? Out for a snack ??

If you rely on power that much, get a generator.

When we were kids, we fucking loved power outages, light some candles and oil lamps. Heat was wood stove anyway. I remember one unusual storm where we were without power for over a week.

Had everyone not cried about them shutting the power off last year, I might have still had my home today.
Not directed at the OP, but I see this a lot.
"You need to upgrade the infrastructure ASAP!"
"Don't turn off my power to upgrade anything, I need my stupid little keurig coffee!"
