New Rav4 Hybrid. 40mpg. AWD. ~$30k. Toyota reliability. Good resale. Makes gas prices pretty irrelevant.

I told my wife she could have anything she wanted when we sold her BMW.... we drove everything and she picked an edge.

77K miles on it, just oil and new tires 5K ago. leather seats, she likes the seat warmer too, has the apple thingy for the phone and it works perfectly... 23.7 mpg over the 77K miles (kept one trip on just that)

plenty fast and comfortable. Her mom has a crv which is a great car for A-B but a tin can compared to the edge.

Wife is driving her late Fathers 2002 MDX and it's been a great car, but it's got 220k on the clock and climbing fast. We'll probably drive it till it dies then I've got my eye on the Kia Soul turbo. 201hp and 30+ MPG without a hybrid system.

Cool thanks for the suggestions. Will check out the cx5. I forgot I was also looking at the lexus 350 whatever it is just to its impressive safety ratings. I'm not sure but I feel like when you call it a lexus all of the sudden parts/ labor/ maintenance goes up 100% over Toyota.

I'd be looking at kia/hyundai, imo they've met or exceeded toyota in reliability and build quality, but without the fan boy premium

My gf loves her 08 santa fe, 150k miles, these regularly get 250k, before the original owner entertains offers

Subaru. Foresters are “cooler”, Outbacks are more les/old person but 2x the car of a forester.

Mazda parts are stupid expensive FYI.

Damn near every Lexus is a common Toyota with different styling and a fancy interior. And actually, the resale value is usually less because of that stigma.

My sil had the Lexus version of the highlander. It was a hybrid, got 25 mpg, and was perfectly reliable. The stupid thing about it was that they made the back of the roof taper down to male it look sporty or whatever. Which made the rear cargo area almost useless.

Unless you are looking for an enthusiast vehicle brand (benz, BMW, etc.), skip the theatrics and get a honda, toyota, or their luxury versions.

Our family vehicle is the traverse because NONE of the other vehicles available at the time matched the options of the traverse. The honda pilot redesign basically copied the traverse and the toyota highlander is similar but a little smaller.

That said, GM interiors aren't known for quality and the replacement vehicle will be an acura as I can't stand the lexus grills. Why the luxury brands? I'm tired of road noise.

We just bought a Hyundai Tuscon AWD. Wife loves it. 32 mpg on the highway. Very comfortable and handles well and cruises 75-80 with little effort. Basically the same as Kia sportage but much better looking. Coiuld use more power it has the 2.0. There's 2.4 option.

Explorers and Highlanders are not small SUVs....they're barges compare to an Escape.

I had an escape for a rental that I put about 1000 miles on last year and I was impressed how well it drove with it's little ecoboost. My vote would be there.

I Didnt like the Mazda cx5 sp I'm not going to show the wife but the hyuanda tuscon looks like a good deal at 25k new with awd. I also realized that a really nice low mile lexus rx350 could be had for that money. Will probably go drive a new escape and Tuscan and go from there.

Thread hijack! What's better from a reliability standpoint, Volkswagen Atlas or Volvo XC90? I think I've got the old lady talked into a 4runner, or Subaru/Honda SUV variant but she keeps throwing me weird curve balls like the goddamned Volkswagen. I think the Volvo would be better?

The wifes 2011 Outback just hit 100k. Done nothing but oil changes and a set of front brakes. 6'2" 280# fat bastard fits quite comfortably. I'd buy another one without a doubt.

I just don't even.
If she's dumb enough to suggest either, let her buy one. She'll find out why after a few years $60k t'regs are now scrap price. Can not imagine the atlas will be any different, and top-line volvos have the same track record.

Take a hard look at the Tucson. Wife drives a 2011 Tucson, and it's got about 90k miles on it, trouble free. I'd be taking a hard look at Hyundai and Kia if I were you.

There is a difference between reliable and durable.

Durable equals toyota, honda, etc.
Reliable equals no problem if you replace everything when IDed and expensive maintenance schedule.

Volvos are reliable but not cheap....they are safe but also chinese now.
VWs are not reliable but not as expensive and no safer than any other ride.

If I remember right the XC90 has NEVER had a fatality....your google-fu may be better.

I have been and the wife really likes how they look. I just cant wrap my head around getting a Hyundai. I looked at 5 year cost of ownership charts and crv seems to be the best bargan... mainly because they almost dont depreciate in 5 years.

I may need to pull the trigger asap as daily the car is throwing new warning lights and shutting down. I looked up kbb trade in thinking I could count on $2500 but it looks like it's worth $2-600. At that price I'll use it for hot laps around the yard and snatch the battery pack and electric motor/transaxle out of it. I figure I can move it around 20 times over the next 10 years with big plans that will never happen before taking it to the dump.
