The USA should be very scared of Iran. If you remember a few years back they were touting that best in the world stealth fighter they built.

That's the first thing I thought of when it was reported that the pic they presented was two years old!

I have to hand to the Iranians; they really made an effort to convince the world it was real:
1) Presentation display (wood-built with markings in English)
2) Fly performance demonstration (RC aircraft)
3) Public relations photo (photoshop inflight)

It is my understanding that not only would we, but so would other nations as well as civilian air traffic control, as the global hawk drone is not a stealth aircraft.

For the leadership they are already in a lose-lose situation, the old guard from the Revolution and the "West is evil" is dying, and 75% of the population no longer holds onto the same views that the leadership does. They are faced with two choices, losing their power, or creating a situation that will once again breed hatred of the West by the masses, they have chosen the latter.

Iran is testing trump. They want to see if he will cave like obama and his line in the sand about poison gas.

(Just my guess.) They see all the media that goes on. they want to goad trump into doing something that they hope will be seen as bad by the world and the voters here and keep him from getting elected. They will undoubtedly get a much better deal from a dem president, and probably another boatload of cash. Trump is really hurting them and they don't want 4 more years of him.

Your (guess) , is Exactly what I was thinking. Iran wants another Obama in office

I stumbled into this interesting little article; it's a good read.

In the old days, it would have been absolutely essential for the United States to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz—through which a third of the world’s crude oil passes daily—remained open. It is less essential now, thanks to the oil shale revolution, which has once again made America an oil giant. We now produce more oil than Saudi Arabia and more than the Russians.

No. Well maybe we need to sell the US Mil some stuff but I don't think Mr T or the Repub want a war.

We don't have any need of Mid East anything. Especially oil. Why aren't we letting the Chinese defend their oil supply ?

China receives 44.1% of it's oil from the Middle East but does nothing to protect it's flow.

The U.S.; on the other hand, does protect the waterways, the Strait of Hormuz.

If shit hits the fan; the U.S. would be in position to not only protect the shipping lanes, but also CONTROL said shipping lanes once said shit hits said fan.

China would be fugged.

44.1% of their imported oil flow would be interrupted.

WE (U.S.) ARE CURRENTLY THE HIGHEST PRODUCER OF OIL IN THE WORLD.

We don't rely on Middle Eastern oil.

Most of our import oil is from Canada.

China doesn't have the military to do it.

They don't have a full deploy-able navy like the U.S. does.

The only country in the world that has anything close to a deploy-able navy is the U.K.

And that's stretching the definition.

I think the US is in a very interesting dominate position right now. We could open up a can of good old American "Whoop Ass" on Iran and close the straits for awhile. Or we could yawn and focus on the south China sea.
Trumps card is to sit tight and let Iran set the stage; we can fuck em up on our terms when we see fit.

Agreed. Should just set off a cobalt salted nuke, making sure it uses the plutonium sourced from Kazakhstan at the time of the fall of the USSR, right in the middle of that shithole country. Then let it all sort itself out.

This will result in a massive wave of emmigration from the area and global-scale social disturbances. Europe would become an actual Caliphate or the those with a high external threat response, i.e. people like us, will take over and because of the huge social and economic disruptions, this would result in a Fourth Reich, which I hope I don't have to explain is probably not good.

A cloud of radioactive fallout would spread East, and following in it's path would be 1 Billion starved, irradiated, desperate Muslims flooding down into the Subcontinent and China. Russia would fold instantly like the house of cards it actually is, and now we have a Caliph in charge of several thousand nuclear weapons and at least 2 functional SSBNs.

I'm not seeing the upsides to your plan.

Trump has the Dems heads spinning off

First, they’re pissed trump talked about retaliation against Iran downing our drone.

Now they’re pissed because trump decided to stand down for now.

Fucking Dems

In 1988 the US accidently shot down an Iranian airliner, 290 died including a bunch of kids...

Maybe it's just payback for the US shooting down an Iranian airliner in 1988..

I believe nothing should be said...and asap an Iranian military plane would be shot down..

So, what about all the other attacks by Iran on the US? None of those count towards the 1988 incident?

We were probably flying the 12nm line that is the 'recognized' international border.

Iran claims up to 24 nm of border, which conveniently covers the Strait of Hormuz.

While it's true we don't depend on the Mideast for our oil, as stated many other countries do. If the strait is closed it would create a huge shortage and the price of oil would skyrocket. This would cause a worldwide economic downturn. This country doesn't exist in a vacuum. What happens to other economies definitely affects us.

As I said before and in the other thread this is Iran's move to raise the price of oil. The embargo is killing them. They need $$$. Learned 2 thing from this thread, if indeed they are true. One, we shot down an Iraninan civilian airliner and 2; Iran claims a 24 mile Nautical limit.

you are not familiar with the fact we shot down a civilian airliner in the late '80's?
