If your sliding something in on the tailgate, it might slow you down.

OK, here's a good setup that is not attached to a 60K pos.
My old assed knees and hips would appreciate this.

Jesus, if you're going that far just build a ramp & have Frank wheel into the bed and grab your shit for you

But seriously: IMHO, build corner steps off the bumper, and leave the tailgate cargo-slideable w/o a speed bump.

Two hipster snow flakes will be way under the limit, real men no way.

With that step on the tailgate, I can still take it off. Removing the fifth wheel hitch mounts, not happening. Also, my bed box against the cab takes up 2 of the 8 feet of the bed. It's a work truck, designed to make me money.

Sometime down the road when these depreciate greatly in value, it will be interesting to see these totaled out by insurance because the 15k tailgate got in a fender bender minor accident.

And we can replace it with plywood and have a cheap truck! Brilliant!

($7k component can be functionally replaced with plywood. What's wrong here?)

My 98 4Runner has a salvage title because of a minor rear end collision. The rear hatch has a power window, a wiper, a washer and a defroster, so I don't know how much one of those is through Camelback Toyota, but the prior owner got one from a recycler or copart or somewhere, and took the check and the spare cash. It was already 16 or so years old, so say that hatch is $3k and the book value is $6k, instant total.

Can't you just put a plain old 2-way tailgate on if it gets smashed?

Probably not. CANBUS would put the truck in limp mode and notify On-Star to send the National Guard.

I would, seriously, not be surprised if that actually happened

Yep, that's the scenario I'm thinking.

Some BCM or like module will probably put the truck in limp mode or cause it to spontaneously combust

I think what we're seeing is the simple fact that's there's only so much you can do when designing a truck. The big auto makers would be better served just firing a few thousand engineers, instead of paying them to come up with stupid shit like this.

Which is unfortunate because a side swinging gate makes loading with a forklift super easy.

BUT ITS INNOVATIVE!!!! And stupid sheep will think the new trinket is the hot shit and buy a truck because it has a silly feature, not because the truck is a solid performer. The gate will wear out sometime after they've traded it in on the next $85k+ vehicle in 3 years anyway.

The tailgate will be a minor inconvenience. The rest of the truck will have unforeseen crippling issues.

Wouldnt doubt it. When that 12" touch screen goes out and its $2800+ labor to R&R and reprogram , their value will drop. Itll be like owning a Maserati.

IIRC the average price for a HALF TON pickup in the last quarter was $48k but you can buy a 3500 high country or 5500 limited for ~$94k if you so desire.

Yep. Just went and bought the wife a used car and a downpayment never even came up in the discusion. They did want to sell me the longest loan possible and acted like a big deal that I wanted 36 months. I called insurance and made sure I had loan gap coverage as soon as I left the lot just to be safe. They also differed payments 2 months so I now owe more then I agreed to buy the car for due to intrest.

It's all fine with me because I understand what's going on and what the money is costing me but I could easily see how someone could get themselves in trouble.
